Chu Debuts New Wicked 2 Clip, No Digital Effects for Tin Man"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\tThe \u201cWicked\u201d sequel \u201cFor Good\u201d\u00a0may not be hitting cinemas until Nov. 21, but director <a href=\"https:\/\/variety.com\/t\/jon-m-chu\/\" id=\"auto-tag_jon-m-chu\" data-tag=\"jon-m-chu\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Jon M. Chu<\/a> dropped by the BFI London Film Festival on Friday to offer a special sneak peak of the follow-up to Universal\u2019s smash hit musical adaptation.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\tThe director debuted a brand-new clip for the audience of his LFF for Free talk, featuring Elphaba (Cynthia Erivo) visiting Glinda (Ariana Grande) on her wedding day. The emotional tease sees the two secretly reunite after the events of \u201cDefying Gravity,\u201d with Glinda dressed in a sparkling white gown, as Elphaba is being hunted down by the Wizard\u2019s flying monkeys. A teary Glinda pleads with Elphaba to talk things out with the Wizard, but before she can finish her appeal, Elphaba is gone.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\tChu also revealed that he did not employ digital effects for the characters of the Tin Man and Scarecrow \u2014 formerly Boq and Fiyero \u2014 in \u201cFor Good.\u201d \u201cBy the way, wait until you see the Tin Man and the Scarecrow,\u201d Chu teased. \u201cThese are not digital effects. These are real, physical make-up and hair and it is extraordinary. I couldn\u2019t show you any footage here, but when you see it, know there was no room for error on it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\tAs for the song \u201cFor Good,\u201d which the sequel gets its title from, Chu said that Erivo and Grande\u2019s performance of it is \u201cthe most beautiful, emotional version of it I\u2019ve ever heard in my life.\u201d <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\t\u201cThat song is about literally what they\u2019re doing with their eyes,\u201d Chu said of shooting the \u201cFor Good\u201d scene. \u201cIt\u2019s the most covered song, it\u2019s the song that everybody has heard many, many times and many different versions, but the advantage that we have in this is that you know these characters.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\tHe continued: \u201cThe way they were singing it to each other almost wasn\u2019t singing, it was just like communicating. And you\u2019ve got to just let them do it and let them drive. It became like, \u2018Filmmakers, get out of the way.&#8217;\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\tChu said he initially filmed the \u201cFor Good\u201d scene with \u201csweeping\u201d shots, and had it in the cut like that for seven months. But \u201cit never sat right,\u201d he said, revealing that he opted for a much more \u201cintimate\u201d feel.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\tBoth \u201cWicked\u201d and \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/variety.com\/t\/wicked-for-good\/\" id=\"auto-tag_wicked-for-good\" data-tag=\"wicked-for-good\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Wicked: For Good<\/a>\u201d were shot back-to-back in the U.K., primarily at NBCUniversal\u2019s vast new Sky Studios Elstree facility. The first \u201cWicked\u201d big screen adaptation, which released in late 2024, became an pop culture phenomenon and box office smash, earning more than $750 million at the box office \u2014\u00a0the fifth-highest grossing film of the year. It was named one of the best films of the year by the American Film Institute and Best Film by the National Board of Review, and went on to land 10 Oscar nominations \u2014\u00a0including best picture \u2014\u00a0eventually winning best costume design and best production design.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\tChu also teased his next project after leaving Oz, a film adaptation of another hit stage music, this time Andrew Lloyd Webber and Tim Rice\u2019s biblical \u201cJoseph and the Amazing Technicolur Dreamcoat.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\t\u201cIt\u2019s something that I hold dear to my heart,\u201d he said of the project, being made for Amazon Studios and reuniting him with his \u201cIn the Heights\u201d producer Scott Sanders. \u201cIt\u2019s my favorite show, but it\u2019s a hard one to preconceive for now and [decide] how to do it with the tone.
