The royal family has always been protected by the British press, but palace insiders are now at a point where they feel they can no longer ignore King Charles III\u2019s health issues<\/a>.<\/p>\n

It\u2019s no secret that the monarch is battling cancer, even though no one knows exactly what type it is, but Tom Sykes\u2019 The Royalist<\/a> Substack is now saying the quiet part out loud. \u201cI was horrified by photographs<\/a> that have emerged in the last few hours of the King at a joint engagement with his son, the Prince of Wales, in London for the COP30 climate summit\u2026.It\u2019s impossible to look at these images without seeing how much King Charles\u2019s health has declined,\u201d he wrote.<\/p>\n

It\u2019s not hard to see that there\u2019s been significant weight loss, and as Sykes pointed out, \u201cThe man\u2019s suit is falling off him.\u201d He believed that Charles\u2019 \u201cillness is taking a heavier toll than the institution will admit.\u201d The royal expert praised the king for his \u201cextraordinary courage\u201d and for showing up with excitement each time he appears, but Sykes is alluding to a cover-up about the state of his health.<\/p>\n

The one person who seems to be realistic about King Charles\u2019 battle is Prince Harry. In May, he spoke to the BBC<\/a> about he is eagerness to mend the rift with his father. \u201cI would love reconciliation with my family. There\u2019s no point continuing to fight any more, life is precious<\/a>,\u201d the Duke of Sussex explained while noting that he did \u201cnot know how much longer [his] father has.\u201d<\/p>\n

That should have been the first clue that Charles wasn\u2019t doing as well as his family and doctors had hoped. It\u2019s also why Harry and Charles seem to be fast-tracking the reunion process. Their September meeting was described by People<\/a> insiders as a positive interaction. \u201cIt shows the way forward,\u201d a source said. \u201cIt is a good starting point.\u201d<\/p>\n

Other royal experts, including Tina Brown, know that Charles is looking heavily at his legacy, and keeping the family feud going \u201cis a bad look.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cCharles knows that in these times of ugly political discord, a fractured royal family is a bad look,\u201d Brown wrote in a September New York Times<\/a> op-ed. \u201cBut it was also the fulfillment of paternal longing. It\u2019s no secret that Charles desperately misses his prodigal son who, in earlier days, was always the fun, ebullient scamp compared with the haughtier, more Hanoverian William.\u201d<\/p>\n

That\u2019s why Sykes is reminding people that it\u2019s important to talk about King Charles\u2019 health right now \u2014\u00a0his life or possible death are \u201ca legitimate matter of public interest.\u201d<\/p>\n

He added, \u201cCharles has told us he has cancer, and his aides have admitted it is incurable, it is frankly an insult to intelligence to try and suppress reporting of it. Charles himself\u2014his condition, his mortality\u2014is the key to understanding everything that is happening in the royal family right now: Harry\u2019s urgency to reconcile, William\u2019s resistance to that reconciliation<\/a>, the tension between the brothers over how their father\u2019s legacy will be managed.\u201d<\/p>\n

It\u2019s a heavy topic to think about, but it might be time for the palace to be honest about what is happening to King Charles right now.<\/p>\n
