{"id":489432,"date":"2025-10-10T22:25:19","date_gmt":"2025-10-10T22:25:19","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/489432\/"},"modified":"2025-10-10T22:25:19","modified_gmt":"2025-10-10T22:25:19","slug":"iconic-bristol-fish-and-chip-shop-closes-after-almost-100-years","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/489432\/","title":{"rendered":"Iconic Bristol fish and chip shop closes after almost 100 years"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The man in charge says it&#8217;s time to retire &#8211; aged 80<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/10\/12162358_2011-09-17__mark_Fishminster__mark_-restaur.jpg\" alt=\"Fishminster restaurant, pictured back in November 2010\" loading=\"eager\"  \/>Fishminster restaurant, pictured back in November 2010(Image: Bristol News &amp; Media)<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\" publication=\"bristolpost\">An iconic fish and chip shop that has served lunch and supper to generations of people in <a class=\"TextLink_text-link__dBSS0 TextLink_enabled__dJF3l\" href=\"https:\/\/www.bristolpost.co.uk\/all-about\/south-bristol\" target=\"_self\" aria-label=\"\" tabindex=\"0\" rel=\"noopener\">South Bristol<\/a> for almost 100 years has closed, after the man who ran it finally retired as he approaches the age of 80.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\" publication=\"bristolpost\">Instead of enjoying some time off, Peter Adams took charge of an iconic South Bristol <a class=\"TextLink_text-link__dBSS0 TextLink_enabled__dJF3l\" href=\"https:\/\/www.bristolpost.co.uk\/whats-on\/food-drink\/\" target=\"_self\" aria-label=\"\" tabindex=\"0\" rel=\"noopener\">fish and chip restaurant<\/a> at the age of 70. He said running Fishminster for the past ten years wasn\u2019t how he pictured his \u2018dream retirement\u2019 to be, but said it was fun working seven days a week for behind the counter.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\" publication=\"bristolpost\">But now, the fish and chip takeaway and restaurant on North Street, Ashton, has closed. It is unclear what will happen to the business next, but Peter said he is now stepping away, thanking the loyal customers he\u2019d grown to know and love over the years. The business is currently listed as &#8216;permanently closed&#8217; on Google.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\" publication=\"bristolpost\">In a post on Nextdoor, Mr Adams described how it was an honour to be at the helm of the fish and chip shop, which had been there for since the early 1930s, and once served lunch and supper to workers at the nearby<a class=\"TextLink_text-link__dBSS0 TextLink_enabled__dJF3l\" href=\"https:\/\/www.bristolpost.co.uk\/news\/history\/lost-photos-1970s-heyday-bristols-9242199\" target=\"_self\" aria-label=\"\" tabindex=\"0\" rel=\"noopener\"> Wills Tobacco factories<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\" publication=\"bristolpost\">\u201cWhilst it was not financially rewarding &#8211; apart from during the pandemic, when we were extra busy and VAT was cut to five per cent &#8211; there was a lot of fun getting to know and forming a bond with our regular customers,\u201d Mr Adams said. \u201cAnd also watching many of our young staff who joined as nervous school kids and watch them grow in confidence, finish their GCSE\u2019s, then on to A levels and then after several years with us, leave for a gap year adventure of head off to university,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\" publication=\"bristolpost\">\u201cAnyway, it has now come to an end, which is a shame as it has been a fish and chip shop for almost 100 years,\u201d he added.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\" publication=\"bristolpost\">\u201cMany years ago we met an old man who said that it was his parents\u2019 fish and chip shop before the war, in the 1930s and they lived above the shop.
