{"id":489496,"date":"2025-10-10T23:00:16","date_gmt":"2025-10-10T23:00:16","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/489496\/"},"modified":"2025-10-10T23:00:16","modified_gmt":"2025-10-10T23:00:16","slug":"eu-tariffs-could-have-drastic-impact-on-welsh-steel","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/489496\/","title":{"rendered":"EU tariffs could have &#8216;drastic impact&#8217; on Welsh steel"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>\n  Rebecca Evans pledged to do \u201ceverything we can\u201d to influence UK-EU talks over plans to cut the amount of tariff-free steel that can be imported into the bloc by nearly half.\n<\/p>\n<p>\n  Ms Evans said: \u201cWe\u2019re extremely concerned [about] the EU\u2019s announcement on the new tariff measures, and what they will mean for the steel industry in Wales and the UK.\u201d\n<\/p>\n<p>\n  She stated Labour ministers are pressing their Westminster counterparts to engage in urgent discussions with the European Commission to ensure Welsh steel is not left behind.\n<\/p>\n<p>\n  Luke Fletcher, Plaid Cymru\u2019s shadow economy secretary, criticised the &#8216;panic-mode&#8217; UK Government for being &#8216;blindsided&#8217; by the announcement.\n<\/p>\n<p>\n  During the October 8 topical questions in the Senedd, Mr Fletcher told the chamber: \u201cThis really is crunch time for the Welsh steel industry.\n<\/p>\n<p>\n  \u201cThe EU decision to almost halve tariff-free quotas for imported steel threatens to cut off access to our biggest export market, with industry leaders warning of this perhaps being the biggest crisis the UK steel sector has ever faced.\u201d\n<\/p>\n<p>\n  Mr Fletcher called for action to ensure Welsh plants, such as Port Talbot and Llanwern, are not left to bear the brunt of a tariff war between Brussels and Washington \u2013 with the EU&#8217;s move widely seen as a response to US tariffs.\n<\/p>\n<p>\n  Ms Evans replied: \u201cThe EU\u2019s proposal clearly has the potential to have drastic consequences for the Welsh steel sector at a time when\u2026 it is already under immense trading pressure due to the US tariffs and global overcapacity.\u201d\n<\/p>\n<p>\n  Labour\u2019s David Rees, who represents the Senedd\u2019s cross-party group on steel, urged Welsh ministers to press the case with European partners as well as UK ministers.\n<\/p>\n<p>\n  The Aberavon Senedd member called for Wales to have a voice in negotiations to protect the country\u2019s interests in securing a tariff-free quota and reduced tariffs for UK steel.\n<\/p>\n<p>\n  Ms Evans agreed that whatever emerges must work well for Wales as well as the UK.\n<\/p>\n<p>\n  She pledged: \u201cWe\u2019ll do everything we can to have the most influence we can in those discussions, setting out exactly how important this is to Wales.\u201d\n<\/p>\n<p>\n  Labour\u2019s John Griffiths, who represents Newport East &#8211; which includes the Llanwern finishing plant &#8211; warned steel is in a vulnerable position following the UK\u2019s exit from the EU.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"Rebecca Evans pledged to do \u201ceverything we can\u201d to influence UK-EU talks over plans to cut the amount&hellip;\n","protected":false},"author":2,"featured_media":489497,"comment_status":"","ping_status":"","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":{"footnotes":""},"categories":[5174],"tags":[2000,299,5187],"class_list":{"0":"post-489496","1":"post","2":"type-post","3":"status-publish","4":"format-standard","5":"has-post-thumbnail","7":"category-eu","8":"tag-eu","9":"tag-europe","10":"tag-european"},"share_on_mastodon":{"url":"","error":""},"_links":{"self":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/489496","targetHints":{"allow":["GET"]}}],"collection":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts"}],"about":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/types\/post"}],"author":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/users\/2"}],"replies":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/comments?post=489496"}],"version-history":[{"count":0,"href":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/489496\/revisions"}],"wp:featuredmedia":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/media\/489497"}],"wp:attachment":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/media?parent=489496"}],"wp:term":[{"taxonomy":"category","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/categories?post=489496"},{"taxonomy":"post_tag","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/tags?post=489496"}],"curies":[{"name":"wp","href":"https:\/\/api.w.org\/{rel}","templated":true}]}}
