Images posted online showed firefighters working to tackle burning blocks of flats. Hrynchuk did not say how many people had lost power. Ukraine\u2019s president, Volodymyr Zelenskyy, said the <strong>Russian strikes targeted civilian and energy infrastructure<\/strong> as Ukraine prepares for winter temperatures.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\"><strong>Russian drones and missiles damaged 12 apartment buildings in the south-eastern Ukrainian city of Zaporizhzhia, <\/strong>killing a seven-year-old boy and injuring four people, according to the regional governor. The Kyiv mayor, Vitali Klitschko, said 12 people had been injured, with eight of them taken to hospital.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\"><strong>Vladimir Putin rowed back his deputy foreign minister\u2019s declaration that the \u201cmomentum\u201d from the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/us-news\/2025\/aug\/15\/trump-putin-alaska-meeting-ukraine\" data-link-name=\"in body link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Alaska talks<\/a> had been lost<\/strong> and that the \u201cedifice of relations\u201d between the US and Russia \u201chas cracked and is collapsing \u2026 the cracks have reached the foundation\u201d. Rybakov made the comments during the week after Donald Trump hardened his line towards Russia. Putin, Russia\u2019s president, said on Friday: \u201cThese are complex issues that require further consideration. But we remain committed to the discussion that took place in Anchorage.\u201d An aide to Putin said contacts with Washington were continuing.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\"><strong>\u201cFair use\u201d of frozen Russian assets <\/strong>for Ukraine\u2019s defence and rebuilding was discussed between the European Central Bank president, Christine Lagarde, and Volodymyr Zelenskyy on Friday. \u201cThere are solutions for how this can be done,\u201d said Ukraine\u2019s president, calling for more political will in Europe to do it. \u201cWe are getting closer to a decision on the assets, and I thank everyone who is helping.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\"><strong>Melania Trump said on Friday that <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/us-news\/2025\/oct\/10\/melania-trump-ukrainian-children-reunited-families\" data-link-name=\"in body link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">eight Ukrainian children had been reunited with their families<\/a><\/strong> after contact with Vladimir Putin. The US first lady in August wrote a letter to Putin and had her husband hand-deliver it during his meeting with the Russian president in Alaska.
