Behind the doors of Balcary Tower<\/a> is a peaceful coastal escape on the Solway Firth. The C-listed, four-storey tower blends 19th-century heritage with modern comfort in one of Dumfries and Galloway\u2019s most picturesque settings, just over 2.5 hours away from Newcastle by car.<\/p>\n

Built around 1860 by Colonel Johnstone, Laird of Auchencairn House, the tower is said to have been constructed for his French mistress, who also served as the family\u2019s governess. Today, it stands as a serene retreat offering 19 acres of private land, direct beach access, and panoramic views over Hestan Island, which was once a hotspot for smugglers and Cistercian monks.<\/p>\n

The property has garnered huge praise on Sykes Cottages,<\/a> where it is highly rated by the holiday let company, with the only reviews on the website calling it “fantastic” and “spectacular.” Among them, one person said: “WOW WOW WOW This tower is amazing with spectacular views from all windows.<\/p>\n

“It is very private, peaceful and very comfortable. The decor and facilities were to a high standard and luxury, and the beds were very comfortable. We had an enjoyable stay and would definitely recommend this property. I will be back.”<\/p>\n

The second reviewer was also happy but did state mugs were needed in the kitchen, writing: “Fantastic location – just needs some mugs in the kitchen.” The property owner has since replied, thanking the reviewer for the feedback and saying they will get the mug situation ‘remedied’.<\/p>\n
