{"id":491264,"date":"2025-10-11T15:04:11","date_gmt":"2025-10-11T15:04:11","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/491264\/"},"modified":"2025-10-11T15:04:11","modified_gmt":"2025-10-11T15:04:11","slug":"militia-strikes-kill-at-least-60-in-sudan-displacement-camp-says-el-fasher-group-sudan","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/491264\/","title":{"rendered":"Militia strikes kill at least 60 in Sudan displacement camp, says El Fasher group | Sudan"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">Militia drone and artillery strikes have killed at least 60 people at a displacement shelter in the besieged city of El Fasher in western <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/world\/sudan\" data-link-name=\"in body link\" data-component=\"auto-linked-tag\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Sudan<\/a>, a local activist group has said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">The Resistance Committee for El Fasher said the Rapid Support Forces (RSF) paramilitary group hit the Dar al-Arqam displacement centre, which is in the grounds of a university.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">Bodies remained trapped in the rubble, the committee said in a statement, describing it as a \u201cmassacre\u201d and calling on the international community to intervene. It said in a later statement that the shelter had been hit twice by drones and eight times by artillery shells on Friday and Saturday.<\/p>\n<p><a data-name=\"placeholder\" href=\"https:\/\/interactive.guim.co.uk\/uploader\/embed\/2025\/10\/sudan-dronestrikemap\/giv-325540Zu9LgOQMZsl\" class=\"dcr-1eupayo\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Map showing drone strikes in Sudan<\/a><\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">\u201cChildren, women and the elderly were killed in cold blood, and many were completely burned,\u201d said the committee, which is part of a group of activists who coordinate aid and document abuses in the Sudan conflict. \u201cThe situation has gone beyond disaster and genocide inside the city, and the world remains silent.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">The RSF has been fighting the Sudanese Armed Forces in a civil war since April 2023. Its militants have put El Fasher under siege for <a href=\"https:\/\/news.un.org\/en\/story\/2025\/09\/1165903\" data-link-name=\"in body link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">more than 500 days<\/a>, and families there are starving.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">El Fasher \u2013 home to 400,000 people \u2013 is the last state capital in the region of Darfur that has not been taken by the RSF. It has become a strategic front in the war as the paramilitaries attempt to consolidate control in the west.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">The UN has <a href=\"https:\/\/news.un.org\/en\/story\/2025\/02\/1160161\" data-link-name=\"in body link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">described<\/a> the Sudan war as one of the worst humanitarian crises of the 21st century. <a href=\"https:\/\/reliefweb.int\/report\/sudan\/forgotten-and-neglected-war-torn-sudan-has-become-worlds-leading-displacement-crisis\" data-link-name=\"in body link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">More than 150,000 people<\/a> have been killed and <a href=\"https:\/\/reliefweb.int\/report\/sudan\/sudan-conflict-and-refugee-crisis-multi-country-external-situation-report-10-covering-reporting-period-march-april-2025\" data-link-name=\"in body link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">more than 14 million<\/a> displaced. Nearly 25 million people have been forced into acute hunger.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">Countrywide fighting, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/commentisfree\/article\/2024\/may\/24\/uae-sudan-war-peace-emirates-uk-us-officials\" data-link-name=\"in body link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">fuelled by international powers<\/a>, has raged in the absence of an effective global effort to end the bloodshed.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">On Friday, the UN high commissioner for human rights, Volker T\u00fcrk, said he was \u201cappalled by the RSF\u2019s endless and wanton disregard for civilian life\u201d in El Fasher.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">He said: \u201cDespite repeated calls, including my own, for specific care to be taken to protect civilians, they continue instead to kill, injure and displace civilians, and to attack civilian objects, including [internally displaced people\u2019s] shelters, hospitals and mosques, with total disregard for international law. This must end.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">Sudan\u2019s current conflict erupted in 2023, but is part of decades of violence.
