Butetown Station, in Cardiff, is still underway. On the Northumberland Line, metro mayor <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bigissue.com\/news\/politics\/kim-mcguinness-interview-north-east-mayor\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Kim McGuinness<\/a> has had to step in with \u00a310.9 million in funding to get the Northumberland Park Interchange back on track, with the station now scheduled for early 2026. Blyth Bebside is scheduled to open on 19 October, and North Tyneside for early 2026.<\/p>\n<p>In the West Midlands, anybody living near three new stations mooted to open in 2024 will instead find months of roadworks taking place, as work continues on Moseley Village, King\u2019s Heath and Pineapple Road stations.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Read more:<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Then there are forward-looking plans. The Western Gateway scheme has plotted 30 new stations across Western England and South Wales. Its \u00a311 billion cost depends on funding from central government \u2013 but proponents say it could bring \u00a317bn into the UK economy.<\/p>\n<p>Labour\u2019s plan to nationalise train operating companies is expected to finish by 2027. While operating companies don\u2019t build stations themselves, this move could help more stations be built by bringing money forward and joining-up thinking.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cFor money to be purely reinvested back in the public sector, it has to be nationalised ownership,\u201d said Martin. Instead of dividends paid out and money going to private hands, he added, \u201cnationalising it has the ability to recoup all of that money for the public sector.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Advertising helps fund Big Issue\u2019s mission to end poverty<\/p>\n<p>At present, different decisions on building stations and spending money are made by different people. Money goes to one place and comes from another. For example, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.networkrail.co.uk\/running-the-railway\/our-routes\/anglia\/improving-the-railway-in-anglia\/beaulieu-station\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">the new Beaulieu Park Station<\/a> is being built by Network Rail at the behest of Essex County Council, using money from central government as well as housing companies. The nationalised Great British Rail has the potential to put this all in one place, with its own motivation and the ability to make longer-term decisions, said Michael Solomon Williams, head of campaigns at the <a href=\"https:\/\/bettertransport.org.uk\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Campaign for Better Transport<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat doesn\u2019t necessarily make everything better straight away,\u201d said Williams. \u201cWe believe it will only succeed if it comes with a real commitment to expanding that network.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The scar for anybody talking about expanding the railways is the Beeching cuts \u2013 in fact, the Campaign for Better Transport was founded to reverse their impact. In the 1960s, <a href=\"https:\/\/researchbriefings.files.parliament.uk\/documents\/LLN-2020-0052\/LLN-2020-0052.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">a report by Lord Beeching resulted in 2,363 stations being earmarked for closure<\/a> \u2013 amounting to around a third of the UK\u2019s network.<\/p>\n<p>Boris Johnson\u2019s levelling up agenda included a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.gov.uk\/government\/news\/government-pledges-500-million-to-bring-back-historic-rail-lines-improving-connectivity-for-communities-across-the-country\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u00a3500m \u201cBeeching Reversal Fund\u201d<\/a> \u2013 also known as the Restoring Your Railway Fund. But as governments changed, that fund fell <a href=\"https:\/\/news.railbusinessdaily.com\/chancellor-announces-the-scrapping-of-the-restoring-your-railway-fund\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">victim to Labour chancellor Rachel Reeves\u2019s cuts in 2024<\/a>, with an estimated \u00a385m saving.<\/p>\n<p>A lack of consistency is a barrier to expanding the UK\u2019s railways, said Mark Havenhand, who leads consultancy <a href=\"https:\/\/www.arup.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Arup\u2019s<\/a> rail planning team.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThere\u2019s no overall plan here. Government, Network Rail, you know, the rail industry is not looking top-down at where the demand is, where it should have those stations, and building a whole planning system around it. Homes in London 500 metres from a station command prices \u00a342,700 more than homes 1,500 metres away, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/business\/2025\/sep\/23\/london-homes-near-station-command-premium-over-those-further-away\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">a recent study found.<\/a><\/p>\n<p>That may be the market\u2019s way of expressing the value of these stations. Williams, of the Campaign For Better Transport, said the boost to health and the economy was clear and obvious.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe\u2019d see far better life chances. At the moment the worst outcome of a lack of connectivity is low life expectancy, worse access to jobs and opportunities and that increases deprivation and increases inequality across the country,\u201d he said.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe reason why we have such such economic wealth and growth in London and not as much easily spread across the UK, is because of transport connectivity, quite simply.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>By one count, <a href=\"https:\/\/trundleage.co.uk\/timeline-of-openings\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">16 stations in the UK were expected to open in 2025<\/a>.
