Legendary former Liverpool captain Steven Gerrard has opted not to return as Rangers manager.<\/strong><\/p>\n

The Scouser led Rangers to an undefeated league title in 2021, but has since seen his star fall as a coach.<\/p>\n

Having left Saudi Arabian side Al Ettifaq in January, Gerrard was in the picture to return at Ibrox<\/a>, three years after his exit for Aston Villa.<\/p>\n

It had looked like a good move for the 45-year-old, who may still harbour hopes of one day returning to Anfield<\/a> as Liverpool manager<\/a>.<\/p>\n

However, after talks over the Rangers job took place, Gerrard<\/a> has reportedly turned down the chance of a move back to Glasgow.<\/p>\n

With fans no doubt disappointed over the U-turn, it has been revealed why Liverpool academy<\/a>\u2018s greatest ever graduate has said no to his former side.<\/p>\n

With Gerrard keen to get his managerial career back on track and Rangers looking to bounce back from a poor time under Russell Martin, it had looked like a good time for the Liverpool legend<\/a> to return.<\/p>\n

However, it seems as though timing was the primary reason behind the former midfielder saying no to the Gers.<\/p>\n

That\u2019s according to BBC Sport<\/a>, who simply state that the \u2018timing of the move\u2019 is believed to be behind Gerrard\u2019s decision.<\/p>\n

Gerrard\u2019s call to turn down Rangers is described as being a \u2018shock move\u2019, with many anticipating that his return was perhaps a formality.<\/p>\n

The Liverpool hero reportedly withdrew from consideration on Saturday, leaving Rangers to consider their other options.<\/p>\n

No further elaboration is given on Gerrard\u2019s thought process or indeed what he is likely to do next.<\/p>\n

Gerrard must be waiting for the right job<\/p>\n

Though a return to Ibrox felt ideal for Gerrard at this juncture, it is possible that he saw the move as a step backwards.<\/p>\n

The Champions League-winning captain has always been a fierce competitor, and may want to challenge himself somewhere else instead.<\/p>\n

That he was willing to interview for the job suggests he was of course interested, so it is hard to see \u2018timing\u2019 as a legitimate reason to pull out.<\/p>\n

Alternatively, it seems clear that Gerrard is waiting for the right job to throw himself back into management.<\/p>\n

His next move will be crucial in determining whether he really is cut out for a long career in coaching or not. He absolutely has to get it right.
