The devastated parents of a Birmingham teenager who died while on a trip to the cinema have paid tribute to the \u2018bubbly, caring and tough\u2018 youngster.<\/p>\n
Kasey-Lei Greene, from Sutton Coldfield<\/a>, had been living with her family in Abu Dhabi for 14 months when she tragically collapsed and died at the Vox Cinema at Yas Mall in the United Arab Emirates capital on Thursday, September 4.<\/p>\n The 13-year-old had gone to the cinem,a with a friend after giving her dad, Marc, a hug at home at around 5.30pm, but collapsed an hour later while watching a film at the venue.<\/p>\n Read more: Poignant moment hundreds of bikers pay tribute to teenager killed in crash<\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n Medics worked on the teen for two hours at the cinema and at hospital but nothing could be done to save her life. She is believed to have died from a cardiac arrest.<\/p>\n Marc, Kasey\u2019s mum Manda and brother, Kian, returned to the UK for Kasey\u2019s funeral last Friday (October 3).<\/p>\n Pink and black ribbons were tied on the funeral procession route from Marc\u2019s mum\u2019s house in Erdington<\/a> to Erdington Abbey in Sutton Road, where more than 600 people turned out to pay their respects.<\/p>\n Many more also watched a live stream of the funeral, including Kasey\u2019s friends and classmates back in Abu Dhabi.<\/p>\n Marc, 37, said he had agreed for Kasey to have her friend, Aria, around for a sleepover on Thursday, September 4.<\/p>\n And because she had been \u2018good around the house and with her brother Kian\u2019, Marc agreed for the friends to go to the Vox Cinema in Yas Island, Abu Dhabi.<\/p>\n He booked them a taxi and Kasey gave her dad a hug \u2013 heartbreakingly for what would be the last time.<\/p>\n Read more: Jobs being cut at trust with 24 schools amid ‘financial challenges’<\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n He said: \u201cAria called me from Kasey\u2019s phone and said \u2018Kasey\u2019s passed out\u2019. I literally ran to the car. The cinema is not even half a mile from my house.<\/p>\n \u201cShe had passed out in the cinema watching the movie.<\/p>\n \u201cOver there, they are on it straight away. They had a defibrillator and an ambulance crew had come in 10 minutes and had a machine on her.<\/p>\n \u201cI was literally screaming, holding her hand. I let them do what they could, but I could see she had gone.<\/p>\n \u201cOfficially, her death is a cardiac arrest. She had had a few issues before.\u201d<\/p>\n On their final moment together before Kasey left for the cinema, dad Marc said: \u201cShe just grabbed me and said to her friend \u2018quick, take a picture of me and my dad\u2019. She didn\u2019t check it.<\/p>\n \u201cShe held me so tight like she knew that was the last time I would ever feel or hear her voice again.<\/p>\n \u201cNormally she would plan it and add filters and redo it if it wasn\u2019t right \u2013 but not this time. That hug blows my mind.\u201d<\/p>\n The Greene family had moved to Abu Dhabi in July 2024, and had bought a house off-plan which was being built for them to move into next year.<\/p>\n They had gone to \u2018try and give the kids a better life\u2019, having been to Abu Dhabi in the United Arab Emirates on holiday over recent years.<\/p>\n Describing Kasey, her parents said she was \u2018bubbly, very outgoing but also dippy\u2019. She used to \u2018really love little kids\u2019.<\/p>\n Read more: Mum’s bid to find man who was with her teenage son in his last moments<\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n Marc said: \u201cShe had very different circles of friends and did try and bring people together.<\/p>\n \u201cThe priest at her funeral said she was sent as an influencer and influenced people to come together.<\/p>\n \u201cHe said the whole time he has been at that church he had never seen that turnout. There was 600 hundred there or more.\u201d<\/p>\n He continued: \u201cShe made friends very easily. From all walks of life.<\/p>\n \u201cShe would bring people home and her friends would call us aunty and uncle. Our house was like a meeting place.\u201d<\/p>\n While mum Manda, 36, added: \u201cShe drew people to her. One girl came up and said \u2018you\u2019re really beautiful\u2019. She went out and just found people.\u201d<\/p>\n Kasey loved family holidays to Disneyland in Florida, to Spain and to the caravan park in Devon.<\/p>\n She also used to love sitting at her vanity unit to do her fake tan, nails and lashes.<\/p>\n Kasey was also doing vlogs on getting ready before posting them on TikTok or Snapchat.<\/p>\n \u201cShe was very humorous and made faces,\u201d her dad said.<\/p>\n Manda said: \u201cShe used to like mugging me off. She would rob my clothes and say I was too fat for them.\u201d Marc said \u2018they were like sisters\u2019.<\/p>\n Manda added: \u201cIf she put her mind to do something she\u2019d do it, 100 per cent.\u201d<\/p>\n Marc continued: \u201cBut she was dippy. She went to the chippy here and ordered a potato scallop and she said \u2018I don\u2019t know what that is, I\u2019m no good at geography\u2019!<\/p>\n \u201cShe would wrap me around her finger.\u201d<\/p>\n Manda added: \u201cBut behind all the dippiness, she was intelligent and tough. She always had a back-up plan for everything.\u201d<\/p>\n In Sutton, the family had lived in Knightswood Close, off Tamworth<\/a> Road, and before that in Boldmere, where Kasey liked going to Sutton Park, being with family and helping with events at her aunty Emma\u2019s pubs.<\/p>\n She was also \u2018massive Aston Villa fan\u2019 and big into trainers.<\/p>\n Kasey also loved American rapper Travis Scott, with dad Marc getting her golden circle tickets, ‘as rare as Willy Wonka golden tickets\u2019 for his concert at the Etihad Arena in Abu Dhabi in November, which she was so looking forward to and had already chosen an outfit to wear.<\/p>\n Kasey had struggled at first in Abu Dhabi for the first three months but then \u2018thrived and excelled\u2019 like Kian, with both loving school.<\/p>\n One of the main reasons they moved there was as Abu Dhabi is the safest city in the world, whereas at home they would worry if Kasey went to the shops.<\/p>\n Kasey\u2019s mum Manda has suffered a double tragedy.<\/p>\n She was back in the UK arranging her mum, Maggie\u2019s funeral, when Kasey collapsed and passed away in Abu Dhabi. Maggie was only 65.<\/p>\n The day before Kasey\u2019s funeral 50 people went out and put pink and black ribbons on the funeral procession route on Chester Road, black being her favourite colour.<\/p>\n At Kasey’s funeral, her cousins Clio and Harrison and friend TJ from Abu Dhabi gave emotional tributes to her.<\/p>\n Now Kasey is laid to rest next to her nan at Oscott Cemetery.<\/p>\n Fundraising project to honour Kasey<\/p>\n Dad Marc said: \u201cI have received thousands of messages. I am finding lots of comfort in people\u2019s acknowledgment of her.<\/p>\n \u201cI have been on auto-pilot since it happened. The last couple of days I think it\u2019s got a little bit tougher.\u201d<\/p>\n But he said: \u201cKian\u2019s given us strength. He\u2019s never known life without her. It\u2019s got to be a lot harder on him.
