{"id":493113,"date":"2025-10-12T08:14:52","date_gmt":"2025-10-12T08:14:52","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/493113\/"},"modified":"2025-10-12T08:14:52","modified_gmt":"2025-10-12T08:14:52","slug":"trump-continues-to-battle-global-green-shipping-push-politico","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/493113\/","title":{"rendered":"Trump continues to battle global green shipping push \u2013 POLITICO"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>That\u2019s putting pressure on the EU to take a more active role.<\/p>\n<p>The key ask from industry is for Brussels to be clear that if the IMO succeeds in bringing in its own system, called the\u00a0Net-Zero Framework, then shippers won\u2019t also be faced with fees under the EU\u2019s Emissions Trading System and its FuelEU Maritime Regulation.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAt this critical juncture, we believe the Commission must send a clear message to the other countries in the IMO process: that the EU \u2026 will avoid any double regulation and double payment for the same emissions,\u201d said Sotiris Raptis, secretary-general with the European Shipowners lobby.<\/p>\n<p>That demand was formalized in an Oct. 3 letter from the European Shipowners to Transport Commissioner Apostolos Tzitzikostas, seen by POLITICO, urging Brussels to speak with one voice before the vote.<\/p>\n<p>In August, Climate Commissioner Wopke Hoekstra\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.europarl.europa.eu\/doceo\/document\/P-10-2025-002734-ASW_EN.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">said\u00a0<\/a>the EU would review both its ETS and FuelEU Maritime Regulation if the IMO standard created a \u201csignificant\u201d extra cost for shippers. But industry says that might not be clear or specific enough.<\/p>\n<p>Major industry groups \u2014 from Japan, Belgium, the Netherlands, Singapore, the U.K., Norway and Denmark \u2014 have also\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/danishshipping.dk\/en\/latest-news\/2025\/maritime-history-in-the-making-industry-backs-imo-net-zero-framework\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">signed\u00a0<\/a>a joint statement urging the EU to take a clear position. They argue that Europe, which already leads on shipping climate policy, should \u201csend a message of alignment\u201d once the IMO deal is adopted.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"That\u2019s putting pressure on the EU to take a more active role.
