If\u00a0don\u2019t mind\u00a0the nipple chafing, toenail peeling and the gruelling hours of non-stop running, they can actually be an enjoyable way to see new places in half the time. There\u2019s a marathon that takes you along the Great Wall of China, one that happens in a Kenyan wildlife conservancy, one set against the backdrop of Mont Blanc and another that traverses the\u00a0romantic streets of Venice. Now,\u00a0a study has revealed the 20 most beautiful marathons of them all, and one here in the UK was awarded third prize.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The most beautiful marathons in the world have been named, based on\u00a0eye-tracking technology. The study by <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sportsshoes.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">SportsShoes.com<\/a>, involved presenting 300 people with images of some of the world\u2019s most popular marathons and analysing their eye movements to see which caught their eyes the most. That\u2019s one way to do it, we suppose.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" id=\"3f03be0f-c149-cb5a-2ba9-75711007e5af\" class=\"photo lazy inline\" loading=\"lazy\" data-component=\"lazy-embed\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/10\/1760257758_232_image.webp.webp\" alt=\"Loch Ness marathon, Scotland\" data-caption=\"\" data-credit=\"Photograph: Alizada Studios \/ Shutterstock.com\" data-width-class=\"\" data-image-id=\"106328967\"\/>&#13;<br \/>\nPhotograph: Alizada Studios \/ Shutterstock.com&#13;<\/p>\n<p>Through that research, the\u00a0<strong>Loch Ness Marathon<\/strong> in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.timeout.com\/scotland\/travel\/most-beautiful-places\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Scotland<\/a>\u00a0was named the third most \u2018visually pleasing\u2019 marathon in the world, after the Big Sur International Marathon in California (famous for its dramatic coastal views) and\u00a0China\u2019s\u00a0Great Wall Marathon. It was given a total \u2018eye-catching score\u2019 of 88 out of 100.
