{"id":494113,"date":"2025-10-12T17:32:11","date_gmt":"2025-10-12T17:32:11","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/494113\/"},"modified":"2025-10-12T17:32:11","modified_gmt":"2025-10-12T17:32:11","slug":"reforms-rise-in-scotland-may-get-unexpected-boost","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/494113\/","title":{"rendered":"Reform\u2019s rise in Scotland may get unexpected boost"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>\n\t\t\t\t\tA fresh push for Scottish independence could benefit Nigel Farage north of the border, say pollsters\t\t\t\t\t                <\/p>\n<p><a class=\"post_in-line_link\" href=\"https:\/\/inews.co.uk\/topic\/reform-uk-party?ico=in-line_link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Reform UK<\/a>\u2019s <a class=\"post_in-line_link\" href=\"https:\/\/inews.co.uk\/news\/politics\/labour-collapse-reform-frontier-3702727?ico=in-line_link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">remarkable rise north of the border<\/a> has damaged both the SNP and Labour\u2019s hopes of winning next year\u2019s Holyrood election in Scotland, experts believe.<\/p>\n<p><a class=\"post_in-line_link\" href=\"https:\/\/inews.co.uk\/topic\/snp?ico=in-line_link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">The SNP<\/a>\u2019s fresh push for <a class=\"post_in-line_link\" href=\"https:\/\/inews.co.uk\/topic\/scottish-independence?ico=in-line_link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Scottish independence<\/a> could further boost Reform\u2019s popularity among pro-union voters who \u201chate\u201d the idea, say political experts.<\/p>\n<p>Sir Keir Starmer has been warned that Reform\u2019s surge could see Scottish Labour\u2019s vote squeezed on both the left and right at the May 2026 election. <\/p>\n<p>New FeatureIn ShortQuick Stories. Same trusted journalism.<\/p>\n<p>Labour\u2019s chances of ousting the SNP in Edinburgh have been significantly hurt by a <a class=\"post_in-line_link\" href=\"https:\/\/inews.co.uk\/news\/politics\/nigel-farage-how-reform-aiming-earthquake-byelection-win-3728996?ico=in-line_link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">surge in support for Nigel Farage\u2019s party in Scotland over the past year<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>The Norstad survey puts Farage\u2019s party up on 20 per cent in the constituency vote, while Anas Sarwar\u2019s party fell to 19 per cent.<\/p>\n<p>The SNP are out in front on 34 per cent \u2013 roughly in line with polls over the past six months. But that kind of result would leave the party short of the majority leader John Swinney so badly wants, say pollsters.<\/p>\n<p>SNP members backed Swinney\u2019s plan to achieve another Scottish independence referendum at the party\u2019s conference in Aberdeen.<\/p>\n<p>The First Minister\u2019s strategy is to declare a mandate for a second referendum so long his party wins a majority of seats \u2013 65 or more \u2013 at the 2026 Holyrood election.<\/p>\n<p>Independence push \u2018opens up space\u2019 for Reform<\/p>\n<p>Polling expert Mark Diffley said Reform they could be the \u201cbeneficiaries\u201d if the SNP makes Scottish independence a major issue in the election campaign.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThere is a danger [for the SNP] in coming across as obsessed with something [independence] that is not most voters\u2019 priority at the moment,\u201d said the founder of The Diffley Partnership consultancy.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt opens up a space for others \u2013 the Tories and Reform \u2013 to make capital out of it, arguing that the SNP is out of touch.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><img fetchpriority=\"high\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" height=\"507\" width=\"760\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/10\/SEI_269226473.jpg\" alt=\"File photo dated 23\/6\/2025 of First Minister John Swinney who has said the Scottish Government is committed to putting &quot;more money in people's pockets&quot; and has called on the UK Government to scrap the two-child limit benefit cap. Photo credit should read: Jane Barlow\/PA Wire\" class=\"wp-image-3960526\"  \/>John Swinney has been warned Reform stands to gain from anti-independence sentiment (Photo: Jane Barlow\/PA Wire)<\/p>\n<p>Allan Faulds, who runs the Ballot Box Scotland poll tracker, said Reform were poised to win many of the voters who \u201chate\u201d the SNP and the idea of independence.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSome voters are still interested in which party is the strongest pro-union party \u2013 strongest is in terms of message, strongest in terms of giving the SNP a bloody nose, as well as doing well in the polls. Reform has already won a lot of those people over.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Prof James Mitchell, Edinburgh University\u2019s professor of public policy, also warned that the SNP\u2019s so-called \u201cindyref2\u201d push \u201ccould help Reform\u201d by boosting support among pro-union hardliners.<\/p>\n<p>However, Prof Mitchell said the problem for Reform is that many Scots are \u201ctotally fed-up with the independence question\u201d and are more focused on public services, the economy and immigration.<\/p>\n<p>So even if Reform attracts a lot of anti-SNP voters anxious about independence \u201cit would be foolish for Reform to actually talk about it [independence] too much\u201d, he added.<\/p>\n<p>Diffley added: \u201cIt\u2019s what Reform are saying on immigration that appears to be bringing voters over to them at the moment.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" height=\"507\" width=\"760\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/10\/SEI_241105257.jpg\" alt=\"Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer with Scottish Labour leader Anas Sarwar (left) after delivering his keynote speech during the Scottish Labour Party conference at the Scottish Exhibition Centre (SEC) in Glasgow. So it\u2019s not going to be a central focus for us or our manifesto.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Last month\u2019s Norstat poll found that 56 per cent of Scots think immigration is are too high, and 60 per cent backed the idea of mass detention and deportation of illegal immigrants.<\/p>\n<p>Frustration with the Labour Government at Westminster on the economy and immigration \u2013 <a class=\"post_in-line_link\" href=\"https:\/\/inews.co.uk\/news\/inside-falkirk-frontline-scotlands-anti-asylum-flag-wars-3927080?ico=in-line_link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">including small boat crossings and asylum hotels<\/a> \u2013 has hurt Sarwar\u2019s hopes of becoming First Minister in 2026.<\/p>\n<p>If those two issues prove key in the votes north of the border, it is feared English council may soon follow, especially after Reform\u2019s performance at the local where the party gained ten council and 677 councillors. <\/p>\n<p>Moreover, if the north of the border is a barometer of the nation\u2019s mood, it suggests the Government is failing to cut through on key topics. <\/p>\n<p>Labour vote faces squeeze by both SNP and Reform<\/p>\n<p>Reform has won over anti-SNP voters on the right from Labour in the past year, said Faulds of Ballot Box Scotland.<\/p>\n<p>But there is also a prospect of Labour losing left-wing voters who fear Reform to the SNP, he and other experts warned.<\/p>\n<p>Swinney has pounced on some Scots\u2019 fears about Reform \u2013 warning that Farage \u201cposes a threat to our values\u201d \u2013 in the hope of winning support from traditional Labour voters.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe SNP needs a strong Reform,\u201d Prof Mitchell told The i Paper. \u201cIt splits the pro-union opposition. And it might well scare some more Labour voters who don\u2019t like Farage into voting for the SNP.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>However, not everyone inside the SNP is convinced Swinney has the right strategy on dealing with Reform.<\/p>\n<p>Former SNP MP Tommy Sheppard has previously warned that \u201cbigging up your opponent is just daft\u201d \u2013 blaming Swinney for this year\u2019s Hamilton by-election defeat to Labour by talking too much about Reform.<\/p>\n<p>One SNP source told The i Paper that continually warning of the threat posed by Reform UK could backfire and anger voters somewhat sympathetic to Farage\u2019s party.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIn Hamilton [by-election] we pitched it as battle between Reform and the SNP, and it didn\u2019t work. It\u2019s not a one-way street. We can lose voters to Reform too,\u201d they warned.<\/p>\n<p>One glimmer of hope for Scottish Labour is that both the SNP and Reform turn off floating voters by obsessing about independence and each other, said Prof Mitchell.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIf the SNP and Reform are talking about independence question, it leaves the field open to Labour to talk about voters\u2019 big priorities \u2013 education, NHS, public services and the economy.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The stakes are high. Swinney has even claimed that a majority SNP victory in 2026 could see Starmer replaced as Labour leader and PM.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI think if I win a majority in the Scottish Parliament next year, I think Keir Starmer won\u2019t be the Prime Minister, and I\u2019ll be negotiating [on independence] with somebody else,\u201d he told LBC.<\/p>\n<p><a class=\"post_in-line_link\" href=\"https:\/\/inews.co.uk\/topic\/nicola-sturgeon?ico=in-line_link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Nicola Sturgeon<\/a> backed Swinney\u2019s strategy after the current leader told SNP members in Aberdeen that \u201cnobody knows\u201d the tactics he will deploy to win a majority. <\/p>\n<p>The former First Minister said: \u201cI\u2019ve known John Swinney for a long, long time and if he says he has a secret plan, he has a secret plan.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Scottish Labour\u2019s deputy leader Jackie Baillie MSP said Swinney\u2019s \u201cindependence obsession\u201d was \u201ca sign of a government running out of ideas\u201d.
