A\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/assets.publishing.service.gov.uk\/media\/64b0f7cdc033c100108062f9\/National-Framework-for-NHS-Continuing-Healthcare-and-NHS-funded-Nursing-Care_July-2022-revised_corrected-July-2023.pdf\" title=\"National Framework for NHS Continuing Healthcare and NHS-funded Nursing Care | GOV.UK\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">national framework<\/a> sets out how decisions should be made, based on the nature, intensity, complexity and unpredictability of a condition.<\/p>\n<p>However, people told us they were denied CHC despite meeting the criteria. Some had funding removed after three-month reviews and subsequent annual reviews, even though their needs either hadn\u2019t changed or even worsened.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI have incurable cancer\u2026 My CHC funding stopped\u2026 I\u2019ve now run out of money and the care home said they could ask me to leave.\u201d\u00a0\u2014 Story shared with Healthwatch Gloucestershire<\/p>\n<p>Appealing a decision was possible, but often painful and confusing. Throughout, people described a lack of communication and compassion among those involved.<\/p>\n<p>\u201c\u2026we&#8217;d been asking time &amp; time again for an NHSCHC reassessment. The only answer people give is \u201cI doubt she\u2019d get it. Nobody gets it.\u201d \u2026The GP said it wasn\u2019t his responsibility, as it was to do with finances. The nursing home said it wasn\u2019t their responsibility.\u201d\u00a0\u2014 Story shared with Healthwatch Medway<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.england.nhs.uk\/statistics\/statistical-work-areas\/nhs-chc-fnc\/\" title=\"Continuing Healthcare and NHS-funded Nursing Care | NHS England\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Data from NHS England<\/a> shows that although the average number of people referred for a CHC assessment has not significantly changed since 2017, the percentage of those found eligible has greatly decreased.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>For example, in quarter one of 2017\/18, 31% of people assessed for CHC funding were found eligible. The most recent data from quarter one of 2025\/26 shows that only 17% of people were found eligible \u2013 a 14% reduction.\u00a0<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"Are decisions about eligibility consistent?
