\n\tCANNES, France \u2014 \u201cThe future began 100 years ago,\u201d proclaimed a three-minute clip shown at a Globo<\/a> Showcase Cocktail on Sunday evening at Mipcom<\/a>, chronicling the Brazilian communications giant\u2019s evolution from newspaper, launched in 1925, to radio and Rede Globo TV network.<\/p>\n

\n\tThe welter of Globo international partnerships and deals confirmed on stage on Sunday at Cannes Carlton Hotel by Angela Colla, Globo Head of International Business and Co-productions, did much to suggest that for Globo the future is beginning again.\u00a0<\/p>\n

\n\tA country the size of a continent, Brazil\u2019s battle this century has been to reach out to the rest of the world and Globo\u2019s challenge to consolidate the broadening of its portfolio from telenovelas \u2013\u00a0 while ensuring that they continue to travel \u2013 to other forms of entertainment and business models, joining the global mainstream.\u00a0<\/p>\n

\n\tOne way to achieve that is format deals. \u201cThis year was key in marking our consolidation in the format sales business,\u201d Colla said in Cannes.\u00a0<\/p>\n

\n\tIn one unannounced pact, Globoplay<\/a> has pacted with Anonymous Content<\/a> for a U.S. version of \u201cThe Others,\u201d Colla announced. Created by Lucas Paraizo (\u201cUnder Pressure\u201d) and charting the current build of intolerance, he has told Variety, \u201cThe Others\u201d is set in a gated community in Rio\u2019s suburbs where a scuffle between two teens escalates into a bloody confrontation between their parents. The format has already sold to Germany (ndF) and Greece (produced by Primavisione, broadcast by Alpha).<\/p>\n

\n\tIn further deals unveiled by Colla, partnering with Turkey\u2019s Ay Yapim, Globo has seen revenge saga \u201cLeyla,\u201d the Turkish adaptation of telenovela phenomenon \u201cBrazil Avenue,\u201d go global, selling to date to more than 20 countries.\u00a0<\/p>\n

\n\tGlobo has sold the format for \u201cAll the Flowers,\u201d about a visually impaired perfumer\u2019s battle for freedom and love, to Greece\u2019s\u00a0 Primavisione and Alpha. It has also clinched a format deal with Portugal\u2019s SIC broadcast network on \u201cPages of Life,\u201d a 2006 modern classic telenovela from Manoel Carlos.\u00a0<\/p>\n

\n\tAnother way to join the global conversation: international co-production with key \u201cA\u201d List creatives and companies. Announced just before the Showcase, via his prodco label Crossing Oceans, Ron Leshem, creator of the original \u201cEuphoria,\u201d will be joining forces with Koby Gal Raday and Ilda Santiago\u2019s Janeiro Studios and Globoplay, the leading Brazilian streaming platform, to produce \u201cParanoia.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n

\n\tTo be co-developed by Leshem and Claudia Jouvin, who broke out this summer as head writer of Globoplay smash hit \u201cPerfect Days,\u201d \u201cParanoia\u201d was described to Variety by its producers as \u201c\u2018Black Swan\u2019 and \u2018Whiplash\u2019 mixed with the feel-good vibes and payoffs of the \u2018Queen\u2019s Gambit\u2019 and the generation-defining impact of \u2018Euphoria.\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\tUnveiled on Saturday, Globo and Fox Entertainment Studios \u2013 the world\u2019s leading producer of Christmas movies \u2013 announced they were partnering to develop and produce an original English-language Christmas movie set and filmed in Brazil. Aiming to ensure cultural authenticity, Globo will provide creative guidance to accurately reflect Brazilian culture and traditions, including the country\u2019s unique celebration of Christmas, which takes place during Brazil\u2019s summer.<\/p>\n

\n\tLate last week, BBC Studios and Brazilian Globo signed a landmark first co-production deal for a doc series that will \u201ctransport audiences to the heart\u201d of Brazil\u2019s sprawling Amazon rainforest.\u201d The series, whose details are still being kept under wraps, will be produced by BBC Studios Specialist Factual Productions and Globo, with a story that innately comes from Brazil,\u201d Janet Brown, president of Global Content Sales at BBC Studios, told Variety.<\/p>\n

\n\tAlex Medeiros, Globoplay Director of Drama, Documentaries and Films drilled down at the Showcase on other co-production arrangements: with Telemundo Studios, a first title to be announced shortly; with Beta Film, announced last year at Mipcom; with Fremantle on the series \u201cCrime Inc,\u201d and with Gaumont USA on \u201cDeluxe,\u201d about the rise and fall of Brazil\u2019s high-fashion icon Eliana Tranchesi, which goes into production this week.<\/p>\n

\n\tNew Globo Shows Catch Fire<\/strong><\/p>\n

\n\tIn straight sales, Globo has licensed to top Argentine network Telefe both \u201cAll the Flowers\u201d and \u201cXuxa, the Documentary,\u201d on Brazil\u2019s biggest pop star.<\/p>\n

\n\tIts trailer shown at the Showcase, Globoplay\u2019s latest release, series \u201cPerfect Days\u201d \u2013 a stylish but rapidly unsettling abduction thriller chosen by Variety among its Must-See TV titles for Mipcom \u2013 has become the most-watched original series on Globoplay of any nationality since its premiere in the Summer, Colla announced, calling the Anonymous Content Brazil production \u201ca thrilling series which still has an impact on me\u201d and which \u201cshows a different side of our audiovisual work.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\tA second Mipcom title, \u201cAnything Goes,\u201d a plush, fast-paced remake of one of Brazil\u2019s biggest telenovela 1980s hits, hit a 56% audience share at the moment of the murder of the arch villainess, while the production is Globo\u2019s top-grossing primetime telenovela in Brazil, with 16 brands, including BYD, Corona, Uber, Amazon, Paramount, and L\u2019Or\u00e9al, participating in 76 branded content actions.\u00a0<\/p>\n

\n\t\u201cWe are storytellers, and our greatest triumph is our commitment to quality and to representing the best of our people \u2014 happiness, hard work, creativity, strength, and optimism, among other core values,\u201d Colla said at the Mipcom Showcase.\u00a0<\/p>\n

\n\t\u201cWe always tell stories in a responsible way, stories that move and connect with all kinds of audiences,\u201d she added. \u201cAnd diversity is not only within the content or genres, such as telenovelas, series, or documentaries, but also in the business models, including finished content, scripted formats, unscripted formats, and co-productions.\u201d<\/p>\n
