{"id":495265,"date":"2025-10-13T04:39:11","date_gmt":"2025-10-13T04:39:11","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/495265\/"},"modified":"2025-10-13T04:39:11","modified_gmt":"2025-10-13T04:39:11","slug":"corbridge-forum-books-to-host-talk-about-untold-war-stories","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/495265\/","title":{"rendered":"Corbridge: Forum Books to host talk about untold war stories"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>\n  Forum Books will host an evening with historian and author John Willis on Thursday, November 6.\n<\/p>\n<p>\n  The book features a collection of lesser-known accounts from the Second World War, including transcribed letters shared between Jean Clarkson and Douglas Capes.\n<\/p>\n<p>\n  Ruth Marlee, their daughter, said: &#8220;Initially, they became pen pals when Douglas Capes was a medic in Montgomery\u2019s 8th Army, and Jean Clarkson lived at Elrington Hall, near Haydon Bridge.\n<\/p>\n<p>\n  &#8220;Life as a &#8216;Desert Rat&#8217; couldn&#8217;t have been more different from Northumbrian rural life.\n<\/p>\n<p>\n  &#8220;The transcript of their letters is a remarkable view of history, which author John Willis added to his fascinating book, *The People&#8217;s War*.\n<\/p>\n<p>\n  &#8220;My parents&#8217; small contribution has been included with the same sensitivity, accuracy and respect that John has given all the unheard stories of everyday bravery, moments of terror, and tales of life-affirming communities.&#8221;\n<\/p>\n<p>\n  Mr Willis is a historian and television executive, known for his roles as director of programmes at Channel 4 and director of factual and learning at the BBC.\n<\/p>\n<p>\n  Forum Books will host the event at 7pm.\n<\/p>\n<p>\n  Tickets are available online at www.ticketsource.co.uk\/forumbooks\/forum-books-presents-the-peoples-war\/e-kjgkra or through Forum Books in Corbridge.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"Forum Books will host an evening with historian and author John Willis on Thursday, November 6.
