{"id":49686,"date":"2025-04-25T15:17:10","date_gmt":"2025-04-25T15:17:10","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/49686\/"},"modified":"2025-04-25T15:17:10","modified_gmt":"2025-04-25T15:17:10","slug":"conchita-martinez-pinpoints-the-one-area-of-feisty-mirra-andreevas-game-that-needs-improving","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/49686\/","title":{"rendered":"Conchita Martinez pinpoints the one area of &#8216;feisty&#8217; Mirra Andreeva\u2019s game that needs improving"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p><strong>Mirra Andreeva has enjoyed a strong start to her 2025 season, picking up two titles at the WTA 1000 level.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The Russian number one won the biggest title of her career at the Dubai Tennis Championships, when <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thetennisgazette.com\/news\/mirra-andreeva-matches-rafael-nadal-feat-after-winning-her-first-wta-1000-title-in-dubai\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Andreeva beat Clara Tauson<\/a> in the final, 7-6, 6-1.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.thetennisgazette.com\/news\/maria-sharapova-sends-message-to-mirra-andreeva-on-social-media-after-she-wins-the-indian-wells-title\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Andreeva then won Indian Wells<\/a>, shocking the world\u2019s top two players, Iga Swiatek and Aryna Sabalenka, on her way to victory in California.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" width=\"1024\" height=\"676\"  src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/04\/GettyImages-2205614689-1024x676.jpg\" alt=\"Photo by Clive Brunskill\/Getty Images\" \/>Photo by Clive Brunskill\/Getty Images<\/p>\n<p>Moving over to clay courts, the 17-year-old hopes to make a deep run at the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thetennisgazette.com\/tag\/madrid-open\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Madrid Open<\/a>, where she reached the quarterfinals last year.<\/p>\n<p>Things certainly look good for <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thetennisgazette.com\/tag\/mirra-andreeva\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Andreeva<\/a>, although her coach has identified an area of her game that needs improvement.<\/p>\n<p>Conchita Martinez says \u2018feisty\u2019 Mirra Andreeva gets in her own head at times<\/p>\n<p>Speaking to Daniela Hantuchova, Andreeva\u2019s coach, Conchita Martinez, shared her thoughts on the \u2018feisty\u2019 youngster.<\/p>\n<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s a pity because sometimes she gets too much into her [head], when she\u2019s into the zone, I don\u2019t need to talk, but when she\u2019s not doing good or she\u2019s more negative, sometimes she doesn\u2019t want to talk,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI think she needs to get better at that, but if she doesn\u2019t want it, there\u2019s nothing I can do; it\u2019s not easy.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI would say that for 17 years old, she\u2019s quite mature, she has that playfulness of a young player, but yeah, she can get feisty on the tennis court.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIf you want to be a champion, you have to get better at those things.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Martinez was, however, complimentary towards the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thetennisgazette.com\/tag\/wta\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">WTA<\/a> star\u2019s work ethic and her eagerness to learn.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" width=\"1024\" height=\"685\"  src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/04\/GettyImages-2205426822-1024x685.jpg\" alt=\"Photo by Clive Brunskill\/Getty Images\" \/>Photo by Clive Brunskill\/Getty Images<\/p>\n<p>\u201cShe\u2019s been practising and training hard, there was a big change after a good pre-season, and you have a little bit more time to work on things, the tennis, physicality, and everything,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cEverything is kind of coming together, she\u2019s playing loose in the matches, and actually something we really tried to do is to become a little bit more aggressive, which I think she\u2019s doing, she\u2019s playing well.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cShe\u2019s a girl that picks [things up] just like that, you tell her something and she\u2019s very talented, she learns really, really fast in any department actually.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" width=\"1024\" height=\"673\"  src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/04\/GettyImages-2209948349-1024x673.jpg\" alt=\"Photo by Robert Prange\/Getty Images\" \/>Photo by Robert Prange\/Getty Images<\/p>\n<p>\u201cShe\u2019s eager to try things, everything that I offer on the table, she will say yes, let\u2019s try, you know?<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNot often do you find a player that likes to get out of her comfort zone.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The Spaniard was then asked whether Andreeva needs to make any other changes to win her first Major title.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cChange? Images<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI think it\u2019s about continuing the work and continuing to get better and better.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI think she\u2019s going on the right track, she\u2019s still very young, what I want is for her to have her feet on the floor, and we don\u2019t try to jump too soon.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe have to go step by step, I think she\u2019s ready, she\u2019s won tournaments, she\u2019s beaten great players, if everything comes together, why not?<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBut, I wouldn\u2019t know when it\u2019s going to happen, but hopefully, yeah, it\u2019s going to happen.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The Russian star is yet to win a Grand Slam title but enjoyed her best performance at a Major tournament on the clay last year, as <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thetennisgazette.com\/news\/chris-evert-explains-what-she-found-so-uncomfortable-about-watching-aryna-sabalenka-against-mirra-andreeva-at-the-french-open\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Andreeva lost to Jasmine Paolini<\/a> in the French Open semi-finals.<\/p>\n<\/p>\n<p>Andreeva will no doubt hope to enjoy another deep Grand Slam run when she returns to the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thetennisgazette.com\/tag\/french-open\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">French Open<\/a> in kicked off her Madrid Open campaign with a big win as she eased past Marie Bouzkova in straight sets to book her place in the third round.<\/p>\n<\/p>\n<p>Next up for Andreeva is a tough test against the 27th seed, Magdalena Frech, who won her opening match against Jessica Bouzas Maneiro.<\/p>\n<p>If she were to advance past Frech, Andreeva could potentially play several top stars on her way to
