Matched at random, each pair exchanged art materials through the post over several months.

The goal was to spark new creative practices, shake up existing working methods, and encourage playful collaboration. The resulting work -comprising collage, photography, and mixed media – will be exhibited this week in The Postal Exchange exhibition at Leith Makers, from 15 October to 26 October 2025.

This project welcomed artists of varying experience levels and backgrounds. At its core, The Postal Exchange sought to foster creative fun, collaboration, and connecting the artistic community while challenging artists to step outside their usual practices and explore new forms of expression.

In addition to the main exhibition, visitors will be invited to contribute to a living collage wall—a massive blank canvas where the public can join in to create a collective piece of artwork in real-time. A commemorative zine will also accompany the exhibition, capturing the ethos and creative outcomes.

One of the artists, Christina Wytko, shared her experience: “The Postal Exchange project has been such a great creative exercise, and I’m eager to see what my fellow artists have created—especially my postal partner, with whom I shared many pages from my late grandfather’s 1960s LIFE magazines. Using materials I’m not usually drawn to is sometimes daunting, but I’ve found peace in going with the flow and removing the self-imposed pressure to stay within my usual style.”

Miriam Morris, curator and participating artist, said: “This project has been a wonderful opportunity for creative play and has helped form a network of peer support. Choosing materials for another artist was challenging but equally meditative, and it was exciting to see what ‘goodies’ I’d receive in return. You can expect to see a mix of collage, mixed-media, photography, and cyanotype on display. For many of the artists, this will be their first time having work exhibited to the public—an exciting moment for them!”

A representative from Leith Makers said: “We’re delighted to host The Postal Exchange exhibition. The concept of this project perfectly aligns with what Leith Makers is all about—supporting local artists and providing space for collective collaboration. We can’t wait to showcase this innovative work and see the public engage with the exhibition.”

Leith Makers is a dynamic exhibition space that highlights fine arts, emerging artists, and community art projects. In addition to exhibitions, they offer development opportunities through workshops and events. Their shop features over 40 local makers, offering original fine art, prints, ceramics, textiles, jewellery, and more.

Participating Artists:
Graham Williams // Louise McLachlan // Michaela Madziova // Holly Macdonald // Emma Macleod // Greag Mac a’ tSaoir // Cordelia Johnstone // Charlotte Buckley // Sarah Davidson (Ghost Bros Photo co,) // Rossella Petta // Christina Wytko // Laura Garrudo // Chloe McDowall // Beth Primrose // Francesca Flynn // Jenna Baer // Valerie Reid // Nina Olshan // Miriam Morris // Hannah Dove // Pirko Edes // Anna McLuckie // Laura Meek //

Like this:

Like Loading…

Related

In 2025, 24 participants have taken part in The Postal Exchange.
