Light Blues bosses are on the hunt for Russell Martin’s successor with Steven Gerrard opting against an emotional return<\/p>\n

Rangers have still to decide if they will move talks with favourite Danny Rohl<\/a> to the next stage as Kevin Muscat waits in the wings.<\/p>\n

Former Sheffield Wednesday manager Rohl was installed as the immediate favourite for the Ibrox job afterSteven Gerrard dropped out of the running on Sunday.<\/a><\/p>\n

The 36-year-old met with the Rangers<\/a> hierarchy last week and impressed Light Blue chiefs in those talks.<\/p>\n

A senior figure at the club wants to give Rohl the job but others have reservations and have put more experienced alternatives forward.<\/p>\n

Former Rangers player Muscat<\/a> is one of those who is being pushed from within.<\/p>\n

Muscat is still in charge of Chinese Super League side Shanghai Port and they are contending for the title, which is due to finish next month.<\/p>\n

Rangers have not made contact with Muscat and are further down the road with Rohl.<\/p>\n

Rohl was part of the process in the summer, before Russell Martin\u2019s unpopular appointment but quickly fell out of the process when his \u00a32.5million release clause became apparent.<\/p>\n

He has since left Sheffield Wednesday and is available for free.<\/p>\n

The German has also coached at Bayern Munich, Southampton, Red Bull Leipzig and with the German national team in his career.<\/p>\n

He would still have to finalise his backroom team if he was to get the nod but would want someone beside him who is well-connected at Rangers.<\/p>\n

Ibrox chiefs went to London last week to hold talks with a number of candidates.<\/p>\n

It had looked like Gerrard was going to return but he decided against it.<\/p>\n

Former Croatia and West Ham United manager Slaven Bilic has seen his odds drop dramatically but it is Rohl who remains the firm favourite.<\/p>\n

It also emerged last night that Ole Gunnar Solskjaer is likely to have met the Ibrox hierarchy.<\/a><\/p>\n

Manchester United legend Paul Scholes<\/p>\n

United legend Paul Scholes let it slip on the Good Bad Football podcast.<\/p>\n

Scholes said: \u201cI was actually with a lad the other night who told me he was actually going to meet Rangers.<\/p>\n

\u201cI\u2019m not sure if he did but his name\u2019s not been mentioned. I don\u2019t think he was going for it. They contacted him and he was going to meet him in London the day after.\u201d<\/p>\n

Former team-mate and podcast sidekick Nicky Butt\u2019s eyes lit up as he said: \u201cOh, I know who you mean.\u201d<\/p>\n

Probed if the not-so-mysterious man had managed United, Scholes smirked: \u201cNo comment.”<\/p>\n

Gers\u2019 international players are due to return over the next 24 to 48 hours and they have a big game against Dundee United at the weekend.<\/p>\n

Reserve coach Steven Smith has been taking training along with fitness coach Rhys Owen and goalkeeping coachSal Bibbo.<\/p>\n
