A few weeks ago, Fred took a tumble during one of his own spirited riding sessions. He was doing what he loves most, pushing himself on the track, but this time, it ended with a painful fall and a broken arm.<\/p>\n
As anyone who knows Fred can imagine, he\u2019d be the last to make a fuss.<\/p>\n
But the reality is, the injury has left him unable to work.<\/p>\n
And here\u2019s the thing \u2013 Fred isn\u2019t just a dedicated volunteer. He\u2019s also a carer, working on a zero-hour contract.<\/p>\n
With his injury, he physically can\u2019t do the lifting required in his job, and without sick pay or regular hours, he\u2019s facing a tough time financially.<\/p>\n
So the club is stepping in. Because if there\u2019s one thing Manchester BMX Club has always done well, it\u2019s looking after its own. Fred has given so much \u2013 his time, his energy, his heart \u2013 and now it\u2019s time we give a little bit of that love back.<\/p>\n

Mike Scruton, who is chairman of Manchester BMX Club, wanted to show Fred how much he means to the club.<\/p>\n
He said: \u201cFred has been with the club since its origins \u2013 about 14 years ago.<\/p>\n
\u201cHe\u2019s always been a great coach, and his dedication is unmatched. Apart from a few holidays a year, he is there every Saturday from 9.30 am to 5 pm, coaching everyone from two-year-olds to 50+ at all levels.<\/p>\n
\u201cHe brings an incredible amount of energy and fun to the sessions. To get through one Saturday takes some doing so to keep doing it is amazing.\u201d<\/p>\n
Mike said he has \u2018no idea\u2019 how many kids and parents Mike has helped out over years, the number must be so high.<\/p>\n
The club attracts about 100 riders every Saturday, and a hugely popular part of the community.<\/p>\n
\u201cHe\u2019s just one of those people who, when he\u2019s around, brightens everyone\u2019s day. We all hope he can get back on his feet as soon as possible.\u201d<\/p>\n
Mike admitted he had no idea how the fundraiser would be received, but it\u2019s already raced to \u00a31000, showing how popular Fred is in the community.<\/p>\n
\u201cIt might not be a huge amount but when you have bills to pay and no income, everything can help.<\/p>\n
\u201cPlease, if you have the means, can you donate to a club legend.\u201d<\/p>\n
Donations have come from far and wife, from old members, people across the BMX community and people scattered all over the North West.<\/p>\n
\u201cI think what sums him up the best, is when Covid restrictions were in place, we kept having to tell him off because everyone wanted to hug Fred.<\/p>\n

A GoFundMe page has been set up by the club to help cover Fred\u2019s living costs while he heals. It\u2019s not about grand gestures \u2013 just helping to ease the stress while he recovers, so he can get back to doing what he does best: inspiring the next generation of riders.<\/p>\n
