{"id":498206,"date":"2025-10-14T07:24:16","date_gmt":"2025-10-14T07:24:16","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/498206\/"},"modified":"2025-10-14T07:24:16","modified_gmt":"2025-10-14T07:24:16","slug":"group-delivering-e1m-medical-aid-to-ukraine-say-russian-attacks-too-close-for-comfort-the-irish-times","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/498206\/","title":{"rendered":"Group delivering \u20ac1m medical aid to Ukraine say Russian attacks \u2018too close for comfort\u2019 \u2013 The Irish Times"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall b-it-article-body__text--left\">A group of businessmen, who recently returned from delivering more than \u20ac1 million worth of medical aid to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/world\/europe\/ukraine-war\/\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/world\/europe\/ukraine-war\/\">Ukraine<\/a>, have reported worsening conditions in Lviv. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall b-it-article-body__text--left\">The convoy of 4&#215;4 vehicles, including ambulances and a mobile kitchen as well as medical equipment, left from Greystones, Co <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/wicklow\/\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/wicklow\/\">Wicklow<\/a>, on September 25th.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall b-it-article-body__text--left\">It was the third annual trip by the group, some of whom were still in Lviv when <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/world\/europe\/2025\/10\/05\/five-dead-after-russian-drone-and-missile-attack-in-ukraine-zelenskiy-says\/\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/world\/europe\/2025\/10\/05\/five-dead-after-russian-drone-and-missile-attack-in-ukraine-zelenskiy-says\/\">the city was bombed by Russian drones<\/a> at the start of this month. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall b-it-article-body__text--left\">Stephen Byrne, who organised the group of 30 men, said Ukrainian people were being \u201cincredibly brave\u201d despite graveyards more than doubling in size since their first trip. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall b-it-article-body__text--left\">\u201cWe visited one woman in [the city of] Kolomyia, Natalia Tarabalka, whose son was a fighter pilot killed in the war. She had given up her home for use by recovering soldiers and she runs an aid centre for those with post-traumatic stress disorder and physical injuries,\u201c he said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall b-it-article-body__text--left\">Mr Byrne said some of the group were \u201cjust two blocks away\u201d from Russia\u2019s missile and drone attacks on the city.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall b-it-article-body__text--left\">\u201cIt was too close for comfort. The sirens go off and everybody has an app telling them where the nearest bomb shelter is. Kids go from school into the bomb shelters and continue their school work. Photograph: Bryan O\u2019Brien\/ The Irish Times <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall b-it-article-body__text--left\">The group drove 15 vehicles to the UK where they met up with Scottish group Jeeps for Peace bringing the total number of vehicles in the convoy to about 40. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall b-it-article-body__text--left\">The vehicles and other equipment in the Irish group have all been acquired through donations and fundraising and were handed over to the Ukranian military, while the medical equipment was given directly to hospitals and orphanages.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall b-it-article-body__text--left\">Mr Byrne thanked Finola Harrington, whose efforts among Irish hospitals and the medical professions secured \u20ac1 million worth of medical equipment.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall b-it-article-body__text--left\">Before setting off, a joint liturgy and blessing was performed by Church of Ireland Archbishop Michael Jackson and Catholic Bishop Donal Roche at The Church of the Holy Rosary in Greystones. The bishops were aided by Canon David Mungavin and Fr Bernardo De Nardo. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Meanwhile, children from St Patrick\u2019s and St David\u2019s schools in Greystones, who have made cards and messages of support for children in Ukraine, also attended the send off. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall b-it-article-body__text--left\">Michael O\u2019Brien, one of the drivers, thanked the schoolchildren for making cards which were last year given to children in Ukraine. \u201cIt is often the first indication to them that there are children outside their school, in the wider world, who care what happens to them.
