And I don\u2019t think it matters whether it\u2019s a couple of days earlier or later; it\u2019s important that it works,\u201d he said.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Brunner acknowledged that the deadline is set out in the law, but said this is \u201cthe first time we\u2019re doing this exercise \u2026 it\u2019s not that easy, because it\u2019s the first time.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Ministers are <a href=\"https:\/\/www.politico.eu\/article\/ministers-set-tackle-migrant-return-hubs-cross-border-deportation-powers\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">meeting<\/a> in Luxembourg on Tuesday to weigh in for the first time on a series of EU plans to appease growing public discontent over migration. Discussions come ahead of a meeting of the bloc\u2019s 27 leaders at a European Council in Brussels later this month, according to documents seen by POLITICO.<\/p>\n<p>The decision to delay comes amid <a href=\"https:\/\/www.politico.eu\/article\/the-week-that-shook-france-emmanuel-macron-sebastien-lecornu-crisis\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">political chaos in France<\/a>, and with elections upcoming in the Netherlands \u2014 both countries where migration is top of the political agenda.<\/p>\n<p>Under the solidarity system, agreed as part of the EU\u2019s flagship migration pact, EU governments can choose to either accept migrants from those struggling with migration or support them with cash and staff.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>But some EU countries are unhappy with Italy and Greece \u2014 likely to be designated as recipients of that support \u2014 for not keeping their end of the bargain by refusing to handle migration cases as set out by the so-called Dublin rules. These stipulate which country should handle asylum applications, typically the applicant\u2019s country of entry to the EU.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe success of the asylum and migration pact, where the solidarity cycle is one of the cornerstones, they go hand in hand,\u201d Anneleen Van Bossuyt, Belgium\u2019s migration minister, said Tuesday.<\/p>\n<p>According to the EU\u2019s statistics agency, Italy received 42,807 requests from other EU countries to readmit asylum-seekers or take charge of their applications in 2024, but accepted just 60.
