Former Emmerdale actor Kelvin Fletcher and his wife Liz are back on screens – but they’re still reeling from a catastrophic fire on their estate.<\/p>\n
Kelvin Fletcher<\/a> welcomes cameras back onto his farm for a third series, and proudly tells cameras he finally feels like a bonafide farmer. \u201cThis is my version of a happy life, we\u2019ve found our purpose now,\u201d he says.<\/p>\n Joining Kelvin in the fourth year of Fletcher\u2019s Family Farm<\/a> is his wife Liz<\/a> and their four children<\/a> – Marnie, Milo and twins Mateusz and Maximus. \u201cI\u2019d even go as far to say the kids are farmers,\u201d Liz says.<\/p>\n The family\u2019s Peak District farm – nestled in Cheshire – is busier than ever. Lambing season is in full swing, and even the twins are lending a hand.<\/p>\n \u201cIt\u2019s our fourth year lambing,\u201d Kelvin says. \u201cWe\u2019re well and truly in our groove. The lambs are flying out at the moment which is great. We\u2019re not having to get involved at all. It\u2019s exactly what you want.\u201d<\/p>\n But there\u2019s more than lambs joining the fold this season. For the first time, the Fletchers welcome a breeding bull to grow their herd – following the success of their prize cow, Cherry, who was crowned Supreme Champion at the Royal Cheshire Show.<\/p>\n \u201cWe\u2019ve never had a male come on the farm to serve before. I\u2019m excited,\u201d says Kelvin, \u201cThe cows were way more excited than him.\u201d The bull\u2019s arrival holds a deeper meaning for Kelvin.<\/p>\n READ MORE: Shoppers ditch cheap tights for pair that ‘feel soft, warm and comfortable’<\/a> He decided to name him Crowther in honour of his late best friend, Steven Crowther. \u201cHe\u2019s named after my best mate who sadly passed away,\u201d Kelvin says.<\/p>\n \u201cEvery time I look at Crowther, I think of my mate. Some of my best memories were with him by my side. If Crowther was going to be an animal, he\u2019d be a bull.\u201d<\/p>\n Kelvin even shared the touching tribute with his late friend\u2019s parents. \u201cI took a picture and sent it to his mum and dad. They were delighted,\u201d Kelvin says.<\/p>\n However, amid the highs came a devastating low. During a rare family trip away, their farmhouse caught fire. \u201cWe took the whole family away and a few days in, we got a call saying the house was on fire,\u201d Liz remembers.<\/p>\n \u201cOur first reaction was \u2018thank god we weren\u2019t here.\u2019\u201d The fire tore through the roof of their beloved home they\u2019d spent years restoring. To make matters worse – the extensive smoke damage has rendered the home inhabitable for the family.<\/p>\n \u201cIt was the stuff of nightmares,\u201d Kelvin says, \u201cOur neighbour called us. She was in a panic and the fire was roaring.\u201d But their hands were tied. \u201cThe fire brigade was called. It was surreal. We were in another country, there was nothing we could do,\u201d Kelvin remembers.<\/p>\n Still, the Fletchers take it all in stride as they walk through the charred remains of their belongings in Fletchers\u2019 Family Farm. \u201cWe just have to clean up and tidy up,\u201d Kelvin says with a smile. \u201cOne thing I love is a rebound,\u201d Liz jokes, \u201cMy ironing board\u2019s gone. Luckily, I never did any ironing.\u201d<\/p>\n The Fletchers aren\u2019t just focused on livestock this year. Kelvin has set his signs on restoring the farm\u2019s legacy as a mixed operation. \u201cThis farm was, once upon a time, a mixed farm,\u201d Kelvin says, \u201cIt did livestock but it grew crops as well from barley, oats, potatoes. However, for the last 20 years, it\u2019s been pure livestock.\u201d<\/p>\n Now, the family are taking on a new challenge – growing their own oats. \u201cWe\u2019re going to grow some oats and hopefully, in six, nine months from now we\u2019ll be sitting at our breakfast table eating our own oats,\u201d Kelvin says. The plan kicks off with Kelvin ploughing his first oat field with over four tonnes of specialist machinery.<\/p>\n But Liz wasn\u2019t as convinced. \u201cThis is definitely Kelvin\u2019s idea and I said I didn\u2019t think it was possible,\u201d Liz says. \u201cWe have a lot of things against us. But he was determined we were going to make oats. It\u2019s such a different venture to us.\u201d<\/p>\n Their oldest daughter Marnie, now eight, is also stepping into her farming boots. Passionate about animals, she\u2019s raising her own herd of Jacob lambs and learning the ropes of shepherding from her father.<\/p>\n Fletchers’ Family Farm returns to ITV on Sunday, October 19.<\/strong><\/p>\n Like this story?
