According to experts, this could be a sign of fatty liver disease.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\" publication=\"mirror\">This is a <a class=\"TextLink_text-link__dBSS0 TextLink_enabled__dJF3l\" href=\"https:\/\/www.mirror.co.uk\/news\/health\/three-warning-signs-silent-killer-30290923\" target=\"_self\" aria-label=\"\" tabindex=\"0\" rel=\"noopener\">serious and potentially life-threatening condition<\/a> that occurs due to an excess of fat in the liver. If not caught in its early stages it can progress as far as cirrhosis (liver scarring) and, ultimately, liver failure.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\" publication=\"mirror\">In its early stages the disease is often symptomless. But, according to the <a class=\"TextLink_text-link__dBSS0 TextLink_enabled__dJF3l\" href=\"https:\/\/britishlivertrust.org.uk\/information-and-support\/liver-conditions\/masld-nafld-and-fatty-liver-disease\/\" target=\"_self\" aria-label=\"\" tabindex=\"0\" rel=\"noopener\">British Liver Trust<\/a>, the colour of your poo can be an indicator of the condition.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\" publication=\"mirror\">Specifically <a class=\"TextLink_text-link__dBSS0 TextLink_enabled__dJF3l\" href=\"https:\/\/www.mirror.co.uk\/news\/health\/silent-killer-liver-disease-10-32279493\" target=\"_self\" aria-label=\"\" tabindex=\"0\" rel=\"noopener\">\u201cdark black tarry poo\u201d is listed as a symptom<\/a>. It urges people to \u201ctell a doctor straight away\u201d if they notice this when they go to the toilet.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/10\/0_GettyImages-1218230376.jpg\" alt=\"Toilet\" loading=\"lazy\"  \/>If you have &#8220;dark black tarry poo\u201d when you go to the toilet you should speak to your GP(Image: Getty)<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\" publication=\"mirror\">\u201cEven if you have no symptoms if you are at risk and are worried ask your doctor for a test,\u201d it adds.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\" publication=\"mirror\">Other signs of fatty liver disease include:<\/p>\n<ul class=\"UnorderedList_unordered-list__gzblI\" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"unordered-list\" publication=\"mirror\">\n<li class=\"sc-700e1ff3-0 VljCu\">Tiredness, fatigue or a general feeling of lethargy<\/li>\n<li class=\"sc-700e1ff3-0 VljCu\">Discomfort on the upper right side of your tummy<\/li>\n<li class=\"sc-700e1ff3-0 VljCu\">Yellowness of the eyes and skin (jaundice)<\/li>\n<li class=\"sc-700e1ff3-0 VljCu\">Bruising easily<\/li>\n<li class=\"sc-700e1ff3-0 VljCu\">Dark urine<\/li>\n<li class=\"sc-700e1ff3-0 VljCu\">Swelling of the tummy area (ascites)<\/li>\n<li class=\"sc-700e1ff3-0 VljCu\">Vomiting blood<\/li>\n<li class=\"sc-700e1ff3-0 VljCu\">Periods of confusion, forgetting things, mood changes or poor judgement<\/li>\n<li class=\"sc-700e1ff3-0 VljCu\">Itching skin<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\" publication=\"mirror\">Around one in five people in the UK are living with fatty liver disease. The trust explains: \u201cRates are increasing with rising levels of obesity.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\" publication=\"mirror\">\u201cAlthough most cases of non-alcoholic fatty liver disease are linked to excess weight, you can develop the disease if you have a healthy weight.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/10\/0_GettyImages-1296294408.jpg\" alt=\"Cirrhosis\" loading=\"lazy\"  \/>Cirrhosis is the most severe stage of liver disease and can lead to liver failure(Image: Getty)<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\" publication=\"mirror\">Factors that put you at greater risk of fatty liver disease include:<\/p>\n<ul class=\"UnorderedList_unordered-list__gzblI\" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"unordered-list\" publication=\"mirror\">\n<li class=\"sc-700e1ff3-0 VljCu\">A weight in the overweight or obese range<\/li>\n<li class=\"sc-700e1ff3-0 VljCu\">A high waist measurement<\/li>\n<li class=\"sc-700e1ff3-0 VljCu\">Type 2 diabetes<\/li>\n<li class=\"sc-700e1ff3-0 VljCu\">A diet with too many unhealthy foods and drinks<\/li>\n<li class=\"sc-700e1ff3-0 VljCu\">Low levels of physical activity or spending a lot of time sitting down<\/li>\n<li class=\"sc-700e1ff3-0 VljCu\">High blood lipids such as cholesterol<\/li>\n<li class=\"sc-700e1ff3-0 VljCu\">High blood pressure<\/li>\n<li class=\"sc-700e1ff3-0 VljCu\">Other conditions linked to insulin resistance, for example &#8211; polycystic ovary syndrome<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\" publication=\"mirror\">The charity adds: \u201cOther diseases can make your liver fatty \u2013 either directly or as a side effect of some medicines. Your doctor will check if these things could play a role.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\" publication=\"mirror\">These medicines include:<\/p>\n<ul class=\"UnorderedList_unordered-list__gzblI\" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"unordered-list\" publication=\"mirror\">\n<li class=\"sc-700e1ff3-0 VljCu\">Nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs<\/li>\n<li class=\"sc-700e1ff3-0 VljCu\">Amiodarone<\/li>\n<li class=\"sc-700e1ff3-0 VljCu\">Corticosteroids<\/li>\n<li class=\"sc-700e1ff3-0 VljCu\">Diltiazem<\/li>\n<li class=\"sc-700e1ff3-0 VljCu\">Methotrexate<\/li>\n<li class=\"sc-700e1ff3-0 VljCu\">Tamoxifen<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\" publication=\"mirror\">But you are advised to not stop taking prescribed medicines and talk to your doctor if you have concerns. There are multiple stages to fatty liver disease that indicate how scarred the liver has become. If the disease is in its early stages it is possible to slow or even reverse it with exercise and a healthy diet.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\" publication=\"mirror\">However, stage four fatty liver disease &#8211; also called cirrhosis &#8211; means there is so much scarring it changes the shape of your liver.
