The first one \u2013 Mary Ann \u2013 broke through earlier this year.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\" publication=\"birminghammail\">Elizabeth and Mary Ann have excavated more than 1.8 million tonnes of material and installed 5,804 concrete ring segments for the twin, eastbound and westbound tunnels. The spoil, made up of various grades of Mercia Mudstone, is being used to landscape the railway on the approaches to the city.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\" publication=\"birminghammail\">Yesterday&#8217;s milestone means that all the excavation is now complete for the 23 miles of deep bore tunnel between Old Oak Common in West London and the railway\u2019s terminus at <a class=\"TextLink_text-link__dBSS0 TextLink_enabled__dJF3l\" href=\"https:\/\/www.birminghammail.co.uk\/\" target=\"\" aria-label=\"\" tabindex=\"0\" rel=\"noopener\">Birmingham<\/a> Curzon Street.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/10\/0_tunnel.jpg\" alt=\"Flags waved after the HS2 tunnel breakthrough in Washwood Heath \" loading=\"lazy\"  \/>Flags waved after the HS2 tunnel breakthrough in Washwood Heath (Image: HS2)<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\" publication=\"birminghammail\">Alan Morris, HS2 Ltd&#8217;s construction delivery director, said yesterday: &#8220;Today\u2019s breakthrough is a major milestone for the tunnelling team here in Birmingham and for the HS2 project.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\" publication=\"birminghammail\">&#8220;All eight of the machines digging our tunnels between Old Oak Common and Curzon Street have now broken through &#8211;
