{"id":500564,"date":"2025-10-15T04:29:10","date_gmt":"2025-10-15T04:29:10","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/500564\/"},"modified":"2025-10-15T04:29:10","modified_gmt":"2025-10-15T04:29:10","slug":"president-zelenskyy-removes-ukrainian-citizenship-of-odesa-citys-mayor-russia-ukraine-war-news","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/500564\/","title":{"rendered":"President Zelenskyy removes Ukrainian citizenship of Odesa city\u2019s mayor | Russia-Ukraine war News"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"article__subhead\">Gennadiy Trukhanov is alleged to have Russian citizenship, which is prohibited in Ukraine.<\/p>\n<p>Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has <a href=\"https:\/\/www.aljazeera.com\/news\/2025\/10\/1\/at-least-9-dead-in-severe-weather-in-ukraines-odesa-as-war-rumbles-on\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">stripped the mayor of Odesa<\/a>, Gennadiy Trukhanov, of Ukrainian citizenship over allegations that he possesses a Russian passport.<\/p>\n<p>The Ukrainian leader has instead appointed a military administration to run the country\u2019s biggest port city on the Black Sea, with a population of about 1 million.<\/p>\n<p>Recommended Stories list of 4 itemsend of list<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe Ukrainian citizenship of the mayor of Odesa, Gennadiy Trukhanov, has been suspended,\u201d Ukraine\u2019s SBU security service announced on the Telegram messaging app on Tuesday, citing a decree signed by Zelenskyy.<\/p>\n<p>The SBU accused the mayor of \u201cpossessing a valid international passport from the aggressor country\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>Ukraine prohibits its citizens from also holding citizenship in Russia, which launched a full-scale invasion of Ukraine in 2022, and the move against Trukhanov could see him deported from the country.<\/p>\n<p>In a post on social media, Zelenskyy said he had held a meeting with the head of the SBU, which had reported on \u201ccountering Russian agent networks and collaborators in the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.aljazeera.com\/news\/2025\/10\/15\/russia-ukraine-war-list-of-key-events-day-1329\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">front-line and border regions<\/a>, as well as in the south of our country\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>The SBU chief \u201cconfirmed\u2026 the fact that certain individuals hold Russian citizenship \u2013 relevant decisions regarding them have been prepared. He has consistently denied accusations of holding Russian citizenship, an allegation that has dogged him throughout his political career.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI have never received a Russian passport. I am a Ukrainian citizen,\u201d Trukhanov stressed in a video message posted on Telegram following the announcement of his citizenship revocation.<\/p>\n<p>Trukhanov said he would \u201ccontinue to perform the duties of elected mayor\u201d as long as possible and that he would take the case to court.<\/p>\n<p>Images of a Russian passport allegedly belonging to Trukhanov have been shared widely on social media in Ukraine.<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\">\n<p lang=\"in\" dir=\"ltr\">SBU says: <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/fcRe8acOgo\">pic.twitter.com\/fcRe8acOgo<\/a><\/p>\n<p>\u2014 Illia Ponomarenko \ud83c\uddfa\ud83c\udde6 (@IAPonomarenko) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/IAPonomarenko\/status\/1978120718215753765?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">October 14, 2025<\/a><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>Once considered a politician with pro-Russian leanings, Trukhanov pivoted after Russia\u2019s full-scale invasion of Ukraine in 2022, and has publicly condemned Moscow while focusing on defending Odesa and aiding the Ukrainian army.<\/p>\n<p>A source familiar with the matter told the Reuters news agency that Zelenskyy had also removed the Ukrainian citizenships of two other people.<\/p>\n<p>Local media outlet The Kyiv Independent identified the two as Ukrainian ballet dancer Sergei Polunin, a vocal supporter of Russian President Vladimir Putin, and former Ukrainian politician and now alleged Russian collaborator Oleg Tsaryov.<\/p>\n<p>Polunin, who sports a large tattoo of Putin on his chest, was born in southern Ukraine but obtained Russian citizenship in 2018.
