{"id":502078,"date":"2025-10-15T17:58:15","date_gmt":"2025-10-15T17:58:15","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/502078\/"},"modified":"2025-10-15T17:58:15","modified_gmt":"2025-10-15T17:58:15","slug":"the-ghost-of-the-titanic-given-stunning-new-lease-of-life-in-greater-manchester","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/502078\/","title":{"rendered":"The &#8216;ghost&#8217; of the Titanic given stunning new lease of life in Greater Manchester"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>People have already been travelling from far afield to view it<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/10\/1_AMR_MEN_151025_GSjpeg.jpg\" alt=\"A 'ghost sign' promoting tickets on-board the Titanic has been given a new lease of life thanks to a new mural next to it\" loading=\"eager\"  \/>A &#8216;ghost sign&#8217; promoting tickets on-board the Titanic has been given a new lease of life thanks to a new mural next to it(Image: Wigan Council)<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\" publication=\"men\">A \u2018ghost sign\u2019 dating back more than 100 years in <a class=\"TextLink_text-link__dBSS0 TextLink_enabled__dJF3l\" href=\"https:\/\/www.manchestereveningnews.co.uk\/all-about\/wigan\" target=\"\" aria-label=\"\" tabindex=\"0\" rel=\"noopener\">Wigan<\/a> has been expanded with a stunning new mural that aims to bring its significant past back to life.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\" publication=\"men\">Street artist Scott Wilcock, who creates work under the alias of Snow Graffiti, created a three-storey mural of the Titanic, situated on the exterior wall of Andy\u2019s All-Day Breakfast caf\u00e9 on Gerald Street in <a class=\"TextLink_text-link__dBSS0 TextLink_enabled__dJF3l\" href=\"https:\/\/www.manchestereveningnews.co.uk\/all-about\/ashton-in-makerfield\" target=\"_self\" aria-label=\"\" tabindex=\"0\" rel=\"noopener\">Ashton-in-Makerfield.<\/a><\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\" publication=\"men\">The artwork, which was funded by <a class=\"TextLink_text-link__dBSS0 TextLink_enabled__dJF3l\" href=\"https:\/\/www.manchestereveningnews.co.uk\/all-about\/wigan-council\" target=\"_self\" aria-label=\"\" tabindex=\"0\" rel=\"noopener\">Wigan Council<\/a> through the government\u2019s Local Regeneration Fund, recognises a century-old \u2018ghost sign\u2019 for William Aspinall\u2019s Chemist and the White Star shipping company.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\" publication=\"men\">A prominent figure in the <a class=\"TextLink_text-link__dBSS0 TextLink_enabled__dJF3l\" href=\"https:\/\/www.manchestereveningnews.co.uk\/all-about\/ashton-and-mossley\" target=\"_self\" aria-label=\"\" tabindex=\"0\" rel=\"noopener\">Ashton<\/a> area in the late 1800s, Aspinal sat on numerous boards and took on positions across the Urban District. An \u2018arm\u2019s-length\u2019 owner of chemists, an advert dating back to 1888 indicated that, at the time, he ran a branch of shops across Scholes, Ashton and Platt Bridge.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\" publication=\"men\"><strong class=\"Strong_strong__e2x35\">Stay connected with our City Life newsletter <a class=\"TextLink_text-link__dBSS0 TextLink_enabled__dJF3l\" href=\"https:\/\/www.manchestereveningnews.co.uk\/newsletter-preference-centre\/?view=Solus&amp;mailingListId=d1c9a1cf-d773-47a3-b51a-f456316221bc&amp;utm_source=solusarticle\" target=\"_blank\" aria-label=\"hereLink opens in a new tab.\" tabindex=\"0\" rel=\"noopener\">here<\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/10\/0_AMR_MEN_151025_GS_09jpeg.jpg\" alt=\"Street artist Scott Wilcock creates work under the alias of Snow Graffiti\" loading=\"lazy\"  \/>Street artist Scott Wilcock creates work under the alias of Snow Graffiti(Image: Wigan Council)<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\" publication=\"men\">The original sign, which is now visibly faded and barely readable, is understood to have been promoting the chemist\u2019s as a licensed vendor of tickets for ocean liners and steamships, including for the ill-fated RMS Titanic voyage in 1912.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\" publication=\"men\">The mural therefore commemorates the tragic story of the Titanic &#8211; which sank on its voyage across the Atlantic and resulted in the deaths of 1,517 people &#8211; while also incorporating elements of Ashton\u2019s history and heritage.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\" publication=\"men\">In fact, the Ashton sign has also been recognised as one of the last remaining ghost signs by the British Titanic Society and further restoration work on the advertisement is hoped to begin soon.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/10\/0_AMR_MEN_151025_GS_02jpeg.jpg\" alt=\"The mural celebrates the historic roots of Ashton\" loading=\"lazy\"  \/>The mural celebrates the historic roots of Ashton(Image: Wigan Council)<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\" publication=\"men\">Snow Graffiti, an Ashton-based artist, used airbrush and graffiti materials to outline some of the town\u2019s historic businesses, including shops and venues no longer in existence today. It also makes reference to films and the artist\u2019s own family. There is even a nod to cafe owner Andy Firman.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\" publication=\"men\">The dad-of-three, who quit his job as a mechanic during the pandemic to follow his artistic passion full-time, has previously created pieces based on the likes of Ozzy Osbourne, Ariana Grande, Oasis and <a class=\"TextLink_text-link__dBSS0 TextLink_enabled__dJF3l\" href=\"https:\/\/www.manchestereveningnews.co.uk\/all-about\/Ricky-Hatton\" target=\"_self\" aria-label=\"\" tabindex=\"0\" rel=\"noopener\">Ricky Hatton<\/a>, and also has a popular YouTube channel with more than 185,000 subscribers.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\" publication=\"men\">\u201cI didn\u2019t realise how much of an impact that some of my murals would have,\u201d Scott said. \u201cSo I made sure to do my research and include as many references and \u2018<a class=\"TextLink_text-link__dBSS0 TextLink_enabled__dJF3l\" href=\"https:\/\/www.manchestereveningnews.co.uk\/all-about\/easter\" target=\"\" aria-label=\"\" tabindex=\"0\" rel=\"noopener\">easter<\/a> eggs\u2019 as I can on this one.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\" publication=\"men\">\u201cAndy has been feeding me throughout the work and loads of people have been stopping to thank me and giving me great feedback.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/10\/1_AMR_MEN_151025_GS_04jpeg.jpg\" alt=\"The 'ghost sign' next to the mural will be restored very soon\" loading=\"lazy\"  \/>The &#8216;ghost sign&#8217; next to the mural will go under restoration work very soon(Image: Wigan Council)<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\" publication=\"men\">\u201cMy family are all from Ashton and have lived here all their lives, so it makes me really proud to see this and include them. People have already been travelling here to see it, so I think it will bring more people into Ashton too.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\" publication=\"men\">The mural is the first in a series of public artworks which will be installed across Ashton in 2026 forming part of a regeneration scheme for the area.
