That means shutdown, which started Oct. 1, will continue.<\/p>\n<p>The Senate did not pass <a href=\"https:\/\/www.usatoday.com\/story\/news\/politics\/2025\/10\/06\/government-shutdown-trump-congress-senate-vote\/86456492007\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">dueling bills<\/a> authored by Republicans and Democrats.\u00a0The Republican-backed measure, which would restore government funding until Nov. 21, was defeated by a vote of 54-45. It needed 60 votes to pass.<\/p>\n<p>The Democrat proposal, which would add health care funding, lost by a vote of 50-47.<\/p>\n<p>In all seven votes, a majority of 55 senators have voted in favor of the Republican bill, mostly along partisan lines with a few important defections. That vote-breaking is unlikely to change; <a href=\"https:\/\/www.usatoday.com\/story\/news\/politics\/2025\/10\/05\/government-shutdown-weekend-trump-democrats\/86506071007\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">no additional Democrats<\/a> have said they would support the measure, USA TODAY reports.<\/p>\n<p>The Senate votes came as President\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.usatoday.com\/news\/politics\/donald-trump\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Donald Trump<\/a>\u00a0warned he\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.usatoday.com\/story\/news\/trump\/2025\/10\/07\/trump-furloughed-federal-workers-backpay-shutdown\/86569690007\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">could block furloughed federal workers<\/a>\u00a0from receiving back pay once this shutdown is over.
