{"id":503128,"date":"2025-10-16T03:27:10","date_gmt":"2025-10-16T03:27:10","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/503128\/"},"modified":"2025-10-16T03:27:10","modified_gmt":"2025-10-16T03:27:10","slug":"brits-are-pining-for-the-pre-brexit-migration-system-politico","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/503128\/","title":{"rendered":"Brits are pining for the pre-Brexit migration system \u2013 POLITICO"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Marley Morris, associate director at the IPPR think tank, said the results appear to reflect \u201cnostalgia from the public for our pre-Brexit immigration model,\u201d but added it would be \u201crash to assume this means there is public appetite for a return to free movement of people.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe overall preference for the pre-Brexit system is most likely the combined result of, on the one hand, the longstanding cohort of Remain supporters continuing to back a pro-EU position, alongside a wider frustration with recent immigration policy, including among those who voted leave.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>So nobody\u2019s happy, but not necessarily for the same reasons.<\/p>\n<p>Rating outcomes<\/p>\n<p>Georgina Sturge, data consultant at Oxford\u2019s Migration Observatory and author of the book \u201cBad Data: How Governments, Politicians and the Rest of Us Get Misled by Numbers,\u201d said the results must be interpreted carefully.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe key question for us is to what extent people are rating immigration systems based on a robust understanding of their different features, and how much of it is just people going off a vague impression \u2014 in other words, which systems give them good and bad vibes?\u201d she said. \u201cPeople\u2019s knowledge of the ins and outs of different immigration systems is very limited on the whole.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>This much is obvious from More in Common\u2019s results. POLITICO also had the pollster ask people what immigration systems they liked and disliked. The most popular was an \u201cAustralian-style points-based immigration system,\u201d with a net 46 percent support.
