{"id":50340,"date":"2025-04-25T20:58:09","date_gmt":"2025-04-25T20:58:09","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/50340\/"},"modified":"2025-04-25T20:58:09","modified_gmt":"2025-04-25T20:58:09","slug":"after-cycling-to-france-serbias-protesting-students-run-to-brussels-to-stir-eu-attention","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/50340\/","title":{"rendered":"After cycling to France, Serbia&#8217;s protesting students run to Brussels to stir EU attention"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>NOVI SAD, Serbia (AP) \u2014 <a class=\"Link AnClick-LinkEnhancement\" data-gtm-enhancement-style=\"LinkEnhancementA\" href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/serbia-students-strasbourg-eu-protest-398094de8251ffb3579231e805fc28a7\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">After cycling all the way to France<\/a>, Serbia\u2019s protesting students on Friday embarked on a new endeavor \u2014 a nearly 2,000-kilometer (1,200-mile) run to Brussels aimed at drawing European Union attention to their <a class=\"Link AnClick-LinkEnhancement\" data-gtm-enhancement-style=\"LinkEnhancementA\" href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/serbia-students-protest-canopy-vucic-b6a2b732a6de562d5e54fe139114a716\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">months-long struggle against corruption<\/a> and for the rule of law in the Balkan country.<\/p>\n<p>More than 20 students set off from the northern <a class=\"Link AnClick-LinkEnhancement\" data-gtm-enhancement-style=\"LinkEnhancementA\" href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/serbia-roof-collapse-protest-vucic-3b095359268663a4ea77eec0cada6e7b\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Serbian city of Novi Sad<\/a> for a relay-style \u201cultra-marathon\u201d that is expected to last for 18 days. Cheered off by hundreds of people, the students headed toward the eastern Croatian town of Osijek, the first stop on their journey.<\/p>\n<p>Nikola Kojcin acknowledged that \u201cit\u2019s going to be really hard, but we\u2019ll make it, we have to make it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>University students have been a key force behind <a class=\"Link AnClick-LinkEnhancement\" data-gtm-enhancement-style=\"LinkEnhancementA\" href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/serbia-protests-vucevic-resigns-b71e3a0aacf5d0368b2bd1f4500170f5\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">a nationwide anti-graft movement<\/a> in Serbia rattling <a class=\"Link AnClick-LinkEnhancement\" data-gtm-enhancement-style=\"LinkEnhancementA\" href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/serbia-protests-vucevic-resigns-b71e3a0aacf5d0368b2bd1f4500170f5\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">populist President Aleksandar Vucic<\/a>. He is formally leading Serbia toward EU membership but has been accused of <a class=\"Link AnClick-LinkEnhancement\" data-gtm-enhancement-style=\"LinkEnhancementA\" href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/serbia-media-eu-monitoring-group-fe82dda84c8b06676b9d43ad69336ef3\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">stifling democratic freedoms<\/a> while boosting ties with Russia and China.<\/p>\n<p>Many pro-democracy Serbs are disappointed with what they view as the EU\u2019s lukewarm response to Vucic\u2019s increasingly authoritarian ways. The students said their run to EU headquarters was a <a class=\"Link AnClick-LinkEnhancement\" data-gtm-enhancement-style=\"LinkEnhancementA\" href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/serbia-sonic-attack-protest-vucic-weapon-214ff2630733b68dd2987e411b405197\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u201creminder\u201d that the bloc should insist on its own values<\/a> of freedom, dignity and the rule of law.<\/p>\n<p>Vucic has repeatedly <a class=\"Link AnClick-LinkEnhancement\" data-gtm-enhancement-style=\"LinkEnhancementA\" href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/serbia-protest-vucic-students-2571ab80897466d8645f10eaac5d8776\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">accused the student protesters<\/a> of staging a \u201ccolor revolution\u201d and working to \u201cdestroy Serbia\u201d under orders from abroad. He told Informer TV on Thursday evening that Serbia has been \u201cattacked\u201d and blamed the protests for alleged huge damage to the country\u2019s economy.<\/p>\n<p>The students said in a press release that they \u201care not asking to be rescued\u201d by the EU but are \u201csending a clear reminder to Europe: democratic values &#8230; must be upheld not only in official declarations but in public awareness and collective action.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The runners are carrying a letter they hope will be read at the EU institutions \u201cso people could hear a bit more about the deep political and social crisis in Serbia,\u201d explained student Aleksa Dimitrijevic.<\/p>\n<p>Almost daily demonstrations <a class=\"Link AnClick-LinkEnhancement\" data-gtm-enhancement-style=\"LinkEnhancementA\" href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/serbia-roof-collapse-china-protests-3cfa282938b1ddec12c4795b9ecb3e95\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">were sparked nearly six months ago<\/a> by a deadly train station canopy collapse in Novi Sad which killed 16 people and which critics blamed on negligence and disrespect of safety regulations fueled by rampant corruption in state-backed infrastructure projects with China.<\/p>\n<p>Symbolically, the student runners started their marathon journey to Brussels from outside the <a class=\"Link AnClick-LinkEnhancement\" data-gtm-enhancement-style=\"LinkEnhancementA\" href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/serbia-roof-collapse-rescue-mourning-66adec34537a93b2c9b73285a0017511\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">now-closed central railway station in Novi Sad<\/a> where tons of concrete crashed without warning on the people standing or strolling underneath on Nov. 1. <\/p>\n<p>Many protesters in Serbia have faced attacks <a class=\"Link AnClick-LinkEnhancement\" data-gtm-enhancement-style=\"LinkEnhancementA\" href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/serbia-protests-blockade-belgrade-canopy-collapse-7daa8f95d14923bd8fff6d73b40f6d59\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">during traffic blockades<\/a> and were questioned by police in the past months.<\/p>\n<p><a class=\"Link AnClick-LinkEnhancement\" data-gtm-enhancement-style=\"LinkEnhancementA\" href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/serbia-students-protests-657ff2fe1488ce7fe8946048da59c252\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">The students who cycles to Strasbourg<\/a>, France, in early April <a class=\"Link AnClick-LinkEnhancement\" data-gtm-enhancement-style=\"LinkEnhancementA\" href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/serbia-france-protest-students-vucic-1a525af705f0076b8957b12594361eef\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">met officials<\/a> from the Council of Europe and the European Parliament.
