All unanswered questions one year after One Direction star&#8217;s fatal fall"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>One year on from Liam Payne&#8217;s tragic death in Argentina, his family are still waiting to learn the full circumstances of the events that led to the One Direction star&#8217;s fall from a balcony<\/p>\n<p>19:45, 15 Oct 2025Updated 07:29, 16 Oct 2025<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/10\/3_FILES-ARGENTINA-BRITAIN-MUSIC-PAYNE-DEATH.jpg\" alt=\"Liam Payne's death one year on - charges, trial dates and family reactions\" loading=\"eager\"  \/>Liam Payne&#8217;s death one year on &#8211; charges, trial dates and family reactions(Image: AFP via Getty Images)<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\" publication=\"mirror\">One year ago today the world was rocked by the news that former <a class=\"TextLink_text-link__dBSS0 TextLink_enabled__dJF3l\" href=\"https:\/\/www.mirror.co.uk\/all-about\/one-direction\" target=\"\" aria-label=\"\" tabindex=\"0\" rel=\"noopener\">One Direction<\/a> star <a class=\"TextLink_text-link__dBSS0 TextLink_enabled__dJF3l\" href=\"https:\/\/www.mirror.co.uk\/all-about\/liam-payne\" target=\"_self\" aria-label=\"\" tabindex=\"0\" rel=\"noopener\">Liam Payne<\/a> had fallen to his death from a hotel balcony.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\" publication=\"mirror\">However, despite a year having passed, investigators are still attempting to piece together Payne&#8217;s final hours in Buenos Aires, Argentina, where he was alone after his girlfriend <a class=\"TextLink_text-link__dBSS0 TextLink_enabled__dJF3l\" href=\"https:\/\/www.mirror.co.uk\/3am\/celebrity-news\/liam-paynes-girlfriend-kate-cassidy-36059839\" target=\"_self\" aria-label=\"\" tabindex=\"0\" rel=\"noopener\">Kate Cassidy<\/a>, 26, flew home.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\" publication=\"mirror\">Charges have been brought against a hotel employee and a waiter, but there are many unanswered questions and the star&#8217;s family still face an agonising wait to learn the full circumstances of the days and hours leading up to his untimely death.<\/p>\n<p><strong class=\"Strong_strong__e2x35\">What we know so far<\/strong><\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\" publication=\"mirror\">Payne died aged 31 after falling from the third floor of the Casa Sur Palmero Hotel around 5pm local time on 16 October 2024, with his funeral held in Amersham, Bucks, the following month.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\" publication=\"mirror\">The singer&#8217;s medical cause of death was ruled by a UK inquest to be polytrauma &#8211; when a person has multiple injuries to the body. CCTV footage is said to show Payne asking Pereyra for \u201cseven grams more\u201d during a brief lift exchange at the hotel on the day he died.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\" publication=\"mirror\">In Argentina, the prosecution must set evidence before a judge, who will decide if a trial goes ahead or if charges will be dropped. A source told The Sun: \u201cPolice are still looking through Liam&#8217;s laptop and the mobile phones of people connected to the inquiry.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\" publication=\"mirror\">\u201cIt&#8217;s very frustrating as the likelihood of a trial still seems a long way off, and there is a sense that the police investigation is too slow.\u201d According to the paper, one of the suspect\u2019s phones was used to contact Payne in the days leading up to his death, but was not searched until May, despite being taken into evidence in November.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\" publication=\"mirror\">If found guilty, Pereyra and Paiz could spend up to 15 years in prison. In the order of service for his funeral, it was revealed that the money would go towards a new centre as part of Payne\u2019s legacy.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\" publication=\"mirror\">The order of service read: &#8220;Your donation today will continue Liam\u2019s legacy by helping to build a brand new Children\u2019s Cancer Centre at Great Ormond Street Hospital.
