{"id":504352,"date":"2025-10-16T14:25:18","date_gmt":"2025-10-16T14:25:18","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/504352\/"},"modified":"2025-10-16T14:25:18","modified_gmt":"2025-10-16T14:25:18","slug":"pinzauer-transforms-hampstead-home-with-concrete-framed-pavilion","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/504352\/","title":{"rendered":"Pinzauer transforms Hampstead home with concrete-framed pavilion"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>An exposed concrete-framed <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dezeen.com\/tag\/extensions\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">extension<\/a> frames views across a garden and sunken <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dezeen.com\/tag\/studios\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">studio<\/a> at this Victorian townhouse in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dezeen.com\/tag\/hampstead\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Hampstead<\/a>, converted into <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dezeen.com\/tag\/apartments\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">apartments<\/a> by local architecture studio Pinzauer.<\/p>\n<p>Named Maresfield Gardens after its address in the Fitzjohns\/Netherhall Conservation Area, the 19th-century, red-brick townhouse has been overhauled by <a href=\"https:\/\/pinzauer.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Pinzauer<\/a> after being home to The Anna Freud Centre \u2013 a children&#8217;s mental health charity founded by the daughter of Sigmund Freud.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-2258911 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/10\/pinzauer-maresfield-gardens-extension-london_dezeen_2364_col_2-852x1065.jpg\" alt=\"Rear view of Maresfield Gardens in London\" width=\"1891\" height=\"2364\"  \/>Pinzauer has renovated and extended a Victorian townhouse in Hampstead<\/p>\n<p>Pinzauer was tasked with restoring the site&#8217;s original residential use, creating four individual apartments that look out onto a new standalone studio it has also designed.<\/p>\n<p>It stripped away previous additions before introducing a concrete-framed rear extension that expanded the building enough to create the four apartments, while opening it up to the garden.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-2258920 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/10\/pinzauer-maresfield-gardens-extension-london_dezeen_2364_col_12-852x1065.jpg\" alt=\"Extension at Hampstead home by Pinzauer\" width=\"1891\" height=\"2364\"  \/>An exposed concrete extension has been added to the home&#8217;s rear<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;We saw the project as an opportunity to introduce a new structure that complements the character of the 19th-century townhouse while creating strong contemporary spaces that engage with the surrounding gardens,&#8221; studio director Gon\u00e7alo Baptista told Dezeen.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;This led to the idea of a &#8216;pavilion in the park&#8217;, with American minimalist artist Sol LeWitt&#8217;s structures being a key conceptual reference,&#8221; Baptista added.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;The exposed cast masonry frame is both structural and expressive, opening the interiors to the garden while bringing in natural light and creating a calm, purposeful material palette.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-2258926 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/10\/pinzauer-maresfield-gardens-extension-london-stale-erikson_dezeen_2364_col_4-852x1065.jpg\" alt=\"Brick studio at London home\" width=\"1891\" height=\"2364\"  \/>A studio sits at the bottom of the garden. Photo by Stale Eriksen<\/p>\n<p>Within the existing townhouse, the apartments have been organised around a central timber staircase. The historic layout of rooms has also been reinstated.<\/p>\n<p>The ground and lower-ground levels extend into the concrete-framed extension, within which spaces are wrapped by full-height, timber-framed windows and sliding doors to provide a direct connection to the garden.<\/p>\n<p>At the centre of the extension, a spiral concrete stair leads directly from the garden up onto a first-floor terrace wrapped by a slim steel balustrade.<\/p>\n<p>\t\t\t\t<a href=\"https:\/\/www.dezeen.com\/2025\/10\/02\/atelier-baulier-twin-pitches-home-extension\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><br \/>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<img loading=\"lazy\" width=\"191\" height=\"191\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/10\/atelier-baulier-twin-pitches-home-extension-sq_dezeen_2364_col_0-191x191.jpg\" class=\"excludeLightbox wp-post-image\" alt=\"Twin Pitches by Atelier Baulier\" decoding=\"async\" data-pin-nopin=\"true\"  \/><\/p>\n<p> Atelier Baulier extends London home using &#8220;frugal and honest&#8221; materials\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/p>\n<p>\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/a><\/p>\n<p>&#8220;We aimed to preserve the sense of a big house, retaining the clarity and hierarchy of the original layout,&#8221; said Baptista. &#8220;The apartments are arranged in line with the historic room configuration, with architectural features largely intact.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;The precision of the new structure often conflicted with the idiosyncrasies of the existing building, requiring close coordination between the client, design team, and contractor,&#8221; he continued. &#8220;However, the contrast also heightened the dialogue between old and new, which became central to the project&#8217;s character.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-2258916 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/10\/pinzauer-maresfield-gardens-extension-london_dezeen_2364_col_9-852x1065.jpg\" alt=\"View towards interior of Maresfield Gardens \" width=\"1891\" height=\"2364\"  \/>The residence contains four individual apartments<\/p>\n<p>Accompanying the apartments on the ground and lower-ground levels is a studio at the bottom of the garden, housed within a sunken, low-lying brick volume.<\/p>\n<p>Within this studio, the brick structure has been left exposed, while full-height windows look out onto two sunken courtyards at the front and rear.
