{"id":50486,"date":"2025-04-25T22:13:16","date_gmt":"2025-04-25T22:13:16","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/50486\/"},"modified":"2025-04-25T22:13:16","modified_gmt":"2025-04-25T22:13:16","slug":"police-preparing-for-a-busy-weekend-in-london","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/50486\/","title":{"rendered":"Police preparing for a busy weekend in London"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Police are preparing for a busy weekend as millions are set to descend on London to attend sporting fixtures, ceremonial events and protests.<\/p>\n<p>A strong police presence will be deployed at key sites as Saturday sees events to mark St George\u2019s Day, the first of two FA Cup semi-finals at\u00a0Wembley, boxing at the Tottenham Stadium and a protest by the Just Stop Oil (JSO) environmental group in Westminster.<\/p>\n<p>Then thousands of runners take part in the mini-marathon on Saturday before the full London Marathon a day later when the second FA Cup semi-final also kicks off at Wembley.<\/p>\n<p>Metropolitan Police Deputy Assistant Commissioner Andy Valentine, who is leading the policing operation, described it as \u201cthe sort of weekend where London comes to life as millions make plans to enjoy the city and the many events taking place\u201d.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/04\/2.75945264.jpg\" alt=\"TCS London Marathon 2024\" data-title=\"TCS London Marathon 2024\" data-copyright-holder=\"PA Archive\" data-copyright-notice=\"PA Archive\/PA Images\" data-credit=\"Aaron Chown\" data-usage-terms=\"RESTRICTIONS: Use subject to restrictions. Editorial use only, no commercial use without prior consent from rights holder.\"  \/>Runners cross Tower Bridge during the TCS London Marathon (Aaron Chown\/PA)<\/p>\n<p>He also cautioned anyone who may be out to cause trouble and urged the public to stay alert.<\/p>\n<p>JSO previously declared that Saturday\u2019s protest set for Parliament Square is the last time it will take \u201cresistance to the street\u201d, claiming it has won its demand to end new oil and gas.<\/p>\n<p>In the past three years,\u00a0JSO\u00a0activists have been arrested for numerous direct action protests, including disrupting a West End performance of The Tempest, blocking roads, pouring paint on a robot at a Tesla shop and spraying orange powder on Stonehenge.<\/p>\n<p>Mr Valentine said: \u201cOur role is to provide a reassuring presence, to ensure that events and other gatherings take place safely and securely, and to respond to any incidents or offences.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhere we\u2019re dealing with protest we will intervene decisively if individuals cross the line into criminality.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe will be keeping a close eye on any attempt to cause serious disruption and dealing swiftly with those intent on doing so.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019d like to remind anyone attending an event this weekend to stay alert and keep your eyes and ears open.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cReport anything that doesn\u2019t feel right, no matter how insignificant it might be, to a steward or an officer.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIf you\u2019re in any doubt, please act.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>JSO has invited supporters to \u201cconverge on the streets of London\u201d on Saturday but added \u201cthis will be a lower-risk action and we won\u2019t be pushing for arrest\u201d.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/04\/2.69663272.jpg\" alt=\"Traffic halted by police on the M25\" data-title=\"Just Stop Oil protests\" data-copyright-holder=\"PA Media\" data-copyright-notice=\"PA Media\" data-credit=\"Just Stop Oil\" data-usage-terms=\"PICTURE DESK USE ONLY.
