Image Credit: Creative Commons.<\/p>\n<p>-The decision solidifies the Typhoon\u2019s role as a vital \u201cbridge\u201d to Europe\u2019s next-generation fighter, a future that is increasingly uncertain.\n<\/p>\n<p>-The Future Combat Air System (FCAS) program is reportedly on the verge of collapse due to \u201cindustrial bickering\u201d between France\u2019s Dassault and Airbus, with German Chancellor Friedrich Merz recently warning that the project is not making progress.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Germany Has Purchased 20 New Eurofighter Typhoons\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The <a href=\"https:\/\/nationalsecurityjournal.org\/germanys-masterplan-for-the-taurus-cruise-missile-breaks-cover\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">German government<\/a> has approved a \u20ac3.75 billion ($4.36 billion) purchase of 20 new <a href=\"https:\/\/nationalsecurityjournal.org\/coming-soon-the-super-eurofighter-typhoon\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Tranche 5<\/a> Eurofighter Typhoon jets,<a href=\"https:\/\/breakingdefense.com\/2025\/10\/germany-signs-off-on-4-4-billion-eurofighter-typhoon-deal\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"> Breaking Defense reported<\/a>. The fighters will come equipped with E-scan radars and are set for delivery throughout the first half of the <a href=\"https:\/\/nationalsecurityjournal.org\/forget-the-f-35-the-super-eurofighter-typhoon-is-coming\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">2030s<\/a>.\n<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe Eurofighter is the mainstay of the German combat aircraft fleet,\u201d the German Ministry of Defense said in a statement, according to Breaking Defense. \u201cThe procurement of Tranche 5 serves to gradually transfer the capabilities of the aging Tornado fighter jet in the area of Electronic Combat and Reconnaissance into a future-proof platform.\u201d\n<\/p>\n<p>The purchase will also allow Germany to continue meeting its NATO obligations on defense spending, the statement <a href=\"https:\/\/nationalsecurityjournal.org\/super-dassault-rafale-and-super-eurofighter-typhoon-are-coming-what-about-f-35\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">emphasized<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>The Eurofighter purchase is the most expensive of seven weapon system acquisitions approved by the budget committee. Other approvals, according to Breaking Defense, include \u201cestimated funding of \u20ac412 for Eurofighter simulators to support pilot training,\u201d as well as a \u201cproject to upgrade the electronic warfare capabilities of Germany\u2019s Typhoon fleet\u201d at a cost of \u20ac1.13 billion.\n<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe Eurofighter is to be optimized with the [Saab produced] AREXIS self-protection system and corresponding air-to-ground guided missiles and further enabled for electronic warfare,\u201d the German Ministry of Defense added.\n<\/p>\n<p>Germany<a href=\"https:\/\/www.airbus.com\/en\/newsroom\/press-releases\/2020-11-airbus-signs-contract-for-38-eurofighters-with-germany\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"> had already announced<\/a> that it planned to place the order after a November 2020 purchase of 38 Eurofighter aircraft under the project name \u201cQuadriga.\u201d\n<\/p>\n<p><strong>Airbus Weighs In\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Airbus touted the Germans\u2019 approval of the purchase, announcing in a statement that the aircraft would be produced at Airbus\u2019 final assembly line in Manching, near Munich, with the first delivery set for 2031.\n<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis new order is further proof of the Eurofighter\u2019s importance to the German Air Force and the strategic role it plays in our country\u2019s air defence and NATO capabilities,\u201d Mike Schoellhorn, CEO of Airbus Defence and Space, said in the company\u2019s statement on Wednesday. \u201cThe continued evolution of the Eurofighter serves as an essential technological and operational bridge to a Future Combat Air System (FCAS), ensuring a seamless transition to the next generation of air power.\u201d\n<\/p>\n<p>Airbus praised the <a href=\"https:\/\/nationalsecurityjournal.org\/dassault-rafale-vs-eurofighter-typhoon-who-wins-the-crown-of-europes-best-fighter\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Eurofighter program<\/a> not only as a guarantee of effective <a href=\"https:\/\/nationalsecurityjournal.org\/eurofighter-typhoon-vs-chinas-new-j-20s-stealth-fighter-who-wins\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">NATO defense<\/a>, but also as \u201ca driver of growth and employment,\u201d securing 100,000 jobs throughout Europe\u2014a quarter of them in Germany alone.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-28806\" class=\"wp-image-28806\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/10\/Eurofighter-Typhoon-over-the-Water.jpg\" alt=\"Eurofighter Typhoon over the Water\" width=\"1200\" height=\"675\"  \/><\/p>\n<p id=\"caption-attachment-28806\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Eurofighter Typhoon over the Water. Image Credit: Creative Commons.<\/p>\n<p>Speaking of NATO, TVP World reported earlier this week that Germany<a href=\"https:\/\/tvpworld.com\/89480628\/german-eurofighter-jets-to-be-stationed-in-poland-says-defense-minister-pistorius\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"> will deploy Eurofighter aircraft<\/a> to Northern Poland amid continuing tensions with Russia.\n<\/p>\n<p>German Defense Minister Boris Pistorius said at this week\u2019s NATO meeting that Germany would be conducting patrol flights as part of<a href=\"https:\/\/shape.nato.int\/news-releases\/eastern-sentry-to-enhance-natos-presence-along-its-eastern-flank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"> NATO\u2019s Eastern Sentry operation<\/a>. This follows recent incursions of Russian drones into NATO airspace.\n<\/p>\n<p>The Germans, Pistorius said, will be \u201ceven more active and even more present and visible\u201d on the Eastern flank.\n<\/p>\n<p>In addition, per TVP World, a German Defense Ministry spokesperson said that two <a href=\"https:\/\/nationalsecurityjournal.org\/bad-news-the-eurofighter-typhoon-is-obsolete\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Eurofighters<\/a> will be \u201cstationed in Malbork from December 2025 till March 2026,\u201d after such jets were stationed in Poland in August and September.\n<\/p>\n<p><strong>About the Eurofighter Program\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The Eurofighter Typhoon program,<a href=\"https:\/\/www.eurofighter.com\/the-programme\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"> according to its website,<\/a> \u201cbrings together the brightest minds in European aerospace to provide a world class weapon system and maintain European security and sovereignty.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The program is a venture of Airbus, BAE Systems, and Leonardo, and brings together Britain, Germany, Spain, and Italy. The United Kingdom and Germany each claim 33 percent ownership of the venture, with Italy owning 21 percent and Spain owning 13 percent.\n<\/p>\n<p><strong>What of the FCAS?\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The Eurofighter is planned to remain in service with the German Air Force through the 2060s. The Future Combat Air System (<a href=\"https:\/\/nationalsecurityjournal.org\/coming-soon-the-great-fcas-6th-generation-fighter-divorce\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">FCAS<\/a>) is expected to become operational around 2040, at which point the Eurofighter \u201cwill also operate networked with current and future crewed and uncrewed aircraft \u2013 and continue to help pilots fulfil their missions.\u201d\n<\/p>\n<p>However, there are doubts about the viability of<a href=\"https:\/\/www.defenceiq.com\/air-forces-military-aircraft\/articles\/the-fcas-programme-explained-a-beginners-guide\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"> the FCAS program<\/a>\u2019s promise to deliver sixth-generation fighter jets bolstered by a new digital infrastructure called the \u201ccombat cloud.\u201d The project was first conceived in 2017.\n<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-18535\" class=\"wp-image-18535\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/10\/FCAS-Fighter-from-Dassault.jpg\" alt=\"FCAS Fighter from Dassault\" width=\"1200\" height=\"675\"  \/><\/p>\n<p id=\"caption-attachment-18535\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">FCAS Fighter from Dassault. Image Credit: Creative Commons.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.economist.com\/europe\/2025\/10\/02\/europes-biggest-military-project-could-collapse\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">The Economist reported this week<\/a> that FCAS, described as Europe\u2019s biggest military project, could collapse\n<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe are not making any progress with this project,\u201d German Chancellor Friedrich Merz said of the FCAS, according to the report. \u201cThings cannot continue as they are.\u201d\n<\/p>\n<p>The Economist believes that \u201cindustrial bickering is putting it all at risk.\u201d To start, French aerospace company Dassault has complained about bureaucracy holding back the project.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI will not accept three people sitting around a table deciding on all the technical aspects required to fly a high-performance aircraft,\u201d Dassault\u2019s CEO Eric Trappier said last week, The Economist reported. \u201cGive us the ability to manage this program.\u201d\n<\/p>\n<p>Airbus, meanwhile, does not want to play a \u201csubordinate role\u201d in the project.\n<\/p>\n<p>France views the project with urgency, since it \u201cneeds a new jet by 2040 to replace the Rafale fighters;\u201d but Germany has been adding American F-35s, meaning it has less pressing need for a new platform.\n<\/p>\n<p>One German lawmaker has warned that Germany could walk away from the project if Dassault doesn\u2019t give ground, the Economist report said\u2014and a recent French-German Cabinet meeting failed to get things on track.\n<\/p>\n<p>The War Zone<a href=\"https:\/\/www.twz.com\/air\/germany-considers-split-from-france-on-next-generation-fighter\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"> reported in September<\/a> that if Germany walks away from FCAS, it could instead team up with the UK or Sweden.\n<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe share the assessment that the current situation is unsatisfactory.
