It\u2019s been a difficult start to 2025-26 in the Women\u2019s Super League for a Liverpool side looking to regroup and rebuild following a difficult 2024-25, with the Reds without a point from their first five league games and stuck on the bottom of the table alongside a similarly floundering West Ham.<\/p>\n
The one bright spot so far has come in the group phase of the Women\u2019s League Cup, where Liverpool beat second division Sunderland in the first game in that competition back in September. Today, they got their second win of the season, also in the League Cup, on the road against Durham WFC.<\/p>\n
\u201cI\u2019m really pleased with the girls,\u201d manager Gareth Taylor said following the 2-1 victory. \u201cI thought they really stuck to the process tonight against a difficult pressing side in Durham who became really, really aggressive after the first five or 10 minutes. The girls managed the game really well.<\/p>\n
\u201cFor a team that\u2019s been struggling to score goals, we looked like we were going to cut them open and on another night we maybe could have scored five or six. The girls stood up to every challenge that was put in front of them: [a bad] pitch, the high press from Durham, the intensity of all that.\u201d<\/p>\n
The Reds were dominant in possession against Durham with a 73% edge on the night. They also out-shot Durham 12 to 3, and in the end won thanks to a Ceri Holland 27th minute strike and an 86th minute Sam Kerr winner after Durham\u2019s Michaela Leigh Foster scored in the 38th.<\/p>\n
The hope now will be that Liverpool can play as well as they have against Sunderland and Durham when it\u2019s first division opposition on the other side of things.
