{"id":505335,"date":"2025-10-16T23:13:14","date_gmt":"2025-10-16T23:13:14","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/505335\/"},"modified":"2025-10-16T23:13:14","modified_gmt":"2025-10-16T23:13:14","slug":"commission-slaps-down-fittos-calls-for-a-budget-compromise-politico","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/505335\/","title":{"rendered":"Commission slaps down Fitto\u2019s calls for a budget compromise \u2013 POLITICO"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Their message is that the EU executive is not yet ready to make compromises to appease lawmakers and national capitals. <\/p>\n<p>Although the Commission&#8217;s statement did not directly refer to Fitto\u2019s comments, the note came hours after the Italian politician publicly suggested that \u201cwe [the Commission] are open to improve this part of this proposal\u201d during a session of the Committee of Regions, a Brussels body that represents local entities.<\/p>\n<p>In his remarks, Fitto referred to a number of provisions in the budget proposal that could be amended to give regions \u2014\u00a0as opposed to national governments \u2014\u00a0more powers in handling EU public funding.<\/p>\n<p>While his remarks were hardly explosive, they underline the simmering tensions over one of the most divisive files in Brussels \u2014\u00a0as well as von der Leyen&#8217;s tough treatment of whomever defies the official line.<\/p>\n<p>The Commission put forward its <a href=\"https:\/\/www.politico.eu\/article\/european-commission-propose-eu-budget-1-816-trillion-ursula-von-der-leyen\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">proposal<\/a> for the EU&#8217;s long-term budget in July.
