Before that, Belgravia, although I thought of it as Victoria. <\/p>\n<p>Where was your first flat in London?<\/p>\n<p>Redcliffe Gardens, SW10, in 1973.<\/p>\n<p>By day, trainee merchant banker for Kleinwort Benson. By night? Bartender for Charcos Wine Bar on the King\u2019s Road. <\/p>\n<p>Where would you recommend for a first date?<\/p>\n<p>Your favourite restaurant, where you are known best \u2014 no insecurity, no surprises.<\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-fBWQRz ktAUpt\">I often stop at Primo Italian Provisions in Primrose Hill. My dog insists I mention it, because of the treats she gets<\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-hknOHE ecFcwj\">Jeremy King<\/p>\n<p>Which five shops do you rely on? <\/p>\n<p>Can I have six? I use Connolly for clothing, apart from ties, which I get from Turnbull &amp; Asser, and Volpe, the tailor on Pimlico\u2019s Denbigh Street, to whom I go for tailored shirts. D R Harris I use for pharmaceuticals and bathroom goods; Heywood Hill for books. And I often stop at Primo Italian Provisions in Primrose Hill. My dog insists I mention it, because of the treats she gets.<\/p>\n<p>What\u2019s the best meal you\u2019ve had? <\/p>\n<p>It was at the Fat Badger in Notting Hill with my wife, Lauren, and art buyer Steven Murphy and his wife Annie. George Williams\u2019 set meals are sublime \u2014 don\u2019t forego the potatoes.<\/p>\n<p>What would you do if you were Mayor for the day?  <\/p>\n<p>Ban negativity \u2014 although I suppose the problem with that is that it appears authoritarian\u2009\u2026\u2009so if not, maybe I would sack all the traffic and parking departments and start again with the ethos that we want to encourage people into the West End rather than deter. <\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/10\/SEI161060964.jpeg\" width=\"3278\" height=\"5000\" alt=\"Paul Smith\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"sc-eqUAAy kgstQG\"\/><\/p>\n<p>Jeremy King says Paul Smith is the nicest Londoner<\/p>\n<p>Dave Benett<\/p>\n<p>Who is the most iconic Londoner ?<\/p>\n<p>In history? I suppose Samuel Johnson. These days? Paul Smith. Who\u2019s also the nicest.<\/p>\n<p>What\u2019s the best thing a cabbie has ever said to you?<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHello Mr King \u2014 to The Wolseley? I love your <a href=\"https:\/\/www.standard.co.uk\/business\/carving-trolleys-west-end-piccadilly-mayfair-fine-dining-b1253229.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">restaurant<\/a>,\u201d he said in the morning and when, extraordinarily, he picked me up again in the afternoon: \u201cHello Jeremy \u2014 I\u2019ve just booked a table!\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Have you ever had a run in with a police officer?<\/p>\n<p>Forty years ago I got out of my car in Trafalgar Square to confront a dangerous driver and when he wound down his window I accidentally poked him in the nose \u2014 honest! \u2014 only for him to reveal, as he swore at me, a car full of plain-clothes policemen. He said he was booking me for assaulting a police officer and that would f*** up the rest of my life. When I started to explain that I had only remonstrated because he was driving as if he was drunk \u2014 I realised he was \u2014 I said: \u201cAlthough of course that couldn\u2019t be true, could it? They have a better grasp than me on how to have fun. <\/p>\n<p>What\u2019s your biggest extravagance?<\/p>\n<p>My Timothy Everest suits, as well as my shirts and ties. And, I suppose, my car (a Bristol 411, of which fewer than 300 were ever produced). <\/p>\n<p>What\u2019s your London secret?<\/p>\n<p>What are you up to for work?<\/p>\n<p>Paul Smith \u2014 a model of modesty, faithfulness and proprietorial presence.<\/p>\n<p>Suits! I have 70. But also books (innumerable) and David Dawson\u2019s photos of Lucian Freud, of which I have perhaps 20.<\/p>\n<p>What\u2019s your favourite work of art?<\/p>\n<p>Outside the galleries? Michael Craig-Martin\u2019s Rose, newly installed at The Park.<\/p>\n<p>What was the last thing you googled?<\/p>\n<p>Kathryn Bigelow\u2019s film A House of Dynamite \u2014 my son Jonah is in it.<\/p>\n<p>What\u2019s your favourite grooming spot?<\/p>\n<p>Josh Wood, if Greg Hill is available to do my hair, or Bastien Gonzalez at 11 Cadogan Gardens Hotel.
