Netflix<\/p>\n<p>If you are in need of some edible flower sprinkles to top your baked goods or a quick and easy pasta recipe, Meghan Markle\u2019s got you.<\/p>\n<p>The Duchess of Sussex recently launched \u201cAs ever,\u201d a brand selling specialty food products like wildflower honey and fruit spreads. The launch coincides with the premiere of Markle\u2019s new Netflix series, \u201cWith Love, Meghan,\u201d where she shows viewers how to make their own candles and homemade dog treats, among other hosting and culinary activities.<\/p>\n<p>From the outside, it may seem like Markle is trying to shed her royal background in order to become <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2025\/03\/01\/style\/meghan-with-love-netflix-lifestyle.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">\u201cthe millennial Martha Stewart of Montecito.\u201d<\/a> But is it possible for her to rebrand?\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis is where the big challenge comes in,\u201d said <a href=\"https:\/\/damore-mckim.northeastern.edu\/people\/alexander-depaoli\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Alex DePaoli<\/a>, an associate teaching professor of marketing at Northeastern University. \u201cIf the first thing people think of when they hear Meghan Markle is the royal family, then that absolutely creates this sort of shadow that she has to pull herself out of.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>However, creating a new chapter for her brand is possible, even if she cannot shed her <a href=\"https:\/\/news.northeastern.edu\/2024\/03\/14\/kate-middleton-photo-pr-crisis\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">association with the British royal family<\/a>.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Northeastern lecturer of marketing <a href=\"https:\/\/damore-mckim.northeastern.edu\/people\/sean-m-gallagher\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Sean M. Gallagher<\/a> points back to the original Martha Stewart as an example of a person whose brand has evolved as she went from stockbroker to food and hosting media mogul to felon and back again.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMartha kept at it, persistently trying to figure out how she was going to develop an attractive brand experience, and she was able to do that,\u201d Gallagher said. \u201cShe\u2019s been up and down over time. Photo by Alyssa Stone\/Northeastern University and Ruby Wallau\/Northeastern University<\/p>\n<p>Like Stewart, Markle\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.goodhousekeeping.com\/life\/a48090\/meghan-markle-facts\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">career has already had different phases.<\/a> She originally rose to fame as an actress on \u201cSuits\u201d and also had a lifestyle blog called The Tig where she ran stories on travel, food, fashion and beauty.<\/p>\n<p>The Tig <a href=\"https:\/\/www.vogue.com\/article\/meghan-markle-shuts-down-lifestyle-website#:~:text=What%20began%20as%20a%20passion,if%20they%20were%20to%20wed.\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">shut down around the time Markle was linked to Prince Harry<\/a>. She wed the<a href=\"https:\/\/news.northeastern.edu\/2025\/01\/24\/prince-harry-settlement-phone-hacking\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"> heir to the British throne in 2018<\/a>. The pair made waves when they stepped down as senior royals in 2020. They launched their own charitable fund, Archewell, and announced a deal with Netflix later that year.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The couple went on to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.townandcountrymag.com\/society\/tradition\/a46613278\/meghan-markle-prince-harry-netflix-projects-explained\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">release four docuseries<\/a> with the streaming service before coming out with \u201cWith Love, Meghan\u201d this year and Markle\u2019s new brand (which was announced last year as <a href=\"https:\/\/news.northeastern.edu\/2024\/03\/19\/meghan-markle-brand-celebrity-lifestyle\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">\u201cAmerican Riviera Orchard\u201d<\/a>).<\/p>\n<p>As ever is touted as being \u201ccreated by Meghan, Duchess of Sussex,\u201d while the series makes a few references to Markle\u2019s connections to the royals (including a scene where she tells guest Mindy Kaling that her last name is now Sussex).\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The couple\u2019s decision to step down as senior royals led to some controversy. But Northeastern experts said Markle might benefit from channeling her royal family association as she seems to have done to some extent with using the Sussex name with her brand.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI think that it would be difficult to separate herself from the British royal family,\u201d added Gallagher. \u201cNor would I suggest she should \u2026 (she) can turn (this association) into an effective lifestyle brand with proper execution.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>DePaoli said that sometimes, when a public figure is making a pivot like this, what matters is the name recognition, no matter the association.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Additionally, incorporating some reminders of her royal status may fuel intrigue for people who\u2019ve followed Markle because of her association with and departure from the royal family.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s not necessarily that we are abandoning this association, it is that we are leaning into this continued narrative arc of trying to pivot away from the family,\u201d DePaoli said. \u201cThat is fodder, potentially, for people to watch. It\u2019s fodder for people to argue about it online. She\u2019s a controversial figure by social media standards, but that\u2019s the reason why you get a TV deal.
