RACHEL Reeves triggered a fresh Brexit row yesterday by declaring the EU more important than America to the economy.<\/p>\n

The Chancellor<\/a> made the remarks hours before meeting her US counterpart<\/a> to try to secure a much-coveted trade deal.<\/a><\/p>\n

No sign of an agreement to eliminate tariffs<\/a> emerged last night following her sitdown in Washington<\/a> with Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent.<\/p>\n

Although it was always unlikely to happen immediately.<\/p>\n

Ahead of her meeting, Ms Reeves<\/a> said she was \u201cconfident\u201d of striking a deal to scrap the 10 per cent blanket import duty on UK products and 25 per cent on cars<\/a>, steel and aluminium.<\/p>\n

Ms Reeves told the BBC: \u201cOur trading relationship with Europe<\/a> is arguably even more important, because they\u2019re our nearest neighbours.\u201d<\/p>\n

Downing Street<\/a> refused to endorse her remarks and said picking to prioritise either Europe<\/a> or America was a \u201cfalse choice\u201d.<\/p>\n

The Tories accused the Labour Cabinet Minister of jeopardising the UK\u2019s chances of landing a deal <\/a>with her remarks.<\/p>\n

And her Tory shadow Mel Stride<\/a> said downplaying the US was wrong.<\/p>\n

He added: \u201cLabour is more interested in reversing Brexit<\/a> freedoms than delivering for Britain.\u201d<\/p>\n
