The days of delivery riders, street drinkers and drug dealers could also be numbered.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\" publication=\"men\">But flowers, grass and families are definitely in. That, in a nutshell, is the blueprint for the revamped <a class=\"TextLink_text-link__dBSS0 TextLink_enabled__dJF3l\" href=\"https:\/\/www.manchestereveningnews.co.uk\/all-about\/piccadilly-gardens\" target=\"\" aria-label=\"\" tabindex=\"0\" rel=\"noopener\">Piccadilly Gardens<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\" publication=\"men\">Work on the long-awaited transformation of <a class=\"TextLink_text-link__dBSS0 TextLink_enabled__dJF3l\" href=\"https:\/\/www.manchestereveningnews.co.uk\/all-about\/manchester-city-centre\" target=\"\" aria-label=\"\" tabindex=\"0\" rel=\"noopener\">Manchester city centre<\/a>\u2019s biggest public square will finally begin in the new year. And after years of debate over the design, today Manchester Evening News politics reporter Joseph Timan <a class=\"TextLink_text-link__dBSS0 TextLink_enabled__dJF3l\" href=\"https:\/\/www.manchestereveningnews.co.uk\/news\/greater-manchester-news\/first-look-new-cgi-images-32689565\" target=\"\" aria-label=\"\" tabindex=\"0\" rel=\"noopener\">exclusively revealed what\u2019s being planned.<\/a><\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\" publication=\"men\">The first phase of the work, which will start after <a class=\"TextLink_text-link__dBSS0 TextLink_enabled__dJF3l\" href=\"https:\/\/www.manchestereveningnews.co.uk\/all-about\/christmas\" target=\"\" aria-label=\"\" tabindex=\"0\" rel=\"noopener\">Christmas<\/a>, will see the fountains ripped out to make way for more grass as well as a permanent space for events while the playground will double in size. Flowers will return to the gardens with the public set to vote on which varieties will feature while the walls on the Piccadilly end will be knocked down and lighting improved to brighten up the space.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\" publication=\"men\">It\u2019s hoped the redesign will help reduce the crime and anti-social behaviour that has long plagued the square. Police will have a dedicated team in the gardens that could share a base with a tourist information centre, while plans for a new transport interchange are also in the pipeline.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/10\/1_JRP_MEN_161025_gardens_007JPG.jpg\" alt=\"Leader of the council Bev Craig walks around Piccadilly Gardens to talk about the new plans. City centre spokesperson Pat Karney described the plans as the <a class=\"TextLink_text-link__dBSS0 TextLink_enabled__dJF3l\" href=\"https:\/\/www.manchestereveningnews.co.uk\/news\/greater-manchester-news\/its-going-biggest-change-piccadilly-32691715\" target=\"\" aria-label=\"\" tabindex=\"0\" rel=\"noopener\">&#8216;biggest change&#8217; in Piccadilly Garden&#8217;s history.<\/a><\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\" publication=\"men\">He said: &#8220;Piccadilly Gardens isn\u2019t living up to anything like its potential at the moment but it could, and should, be a great public space for Manchester.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\" publication=\"men\">&#8220;This plan promises to be a massive leap forward.
