Cherry Cheng has a typical CV for someone in the art world: she studied art business at Sotheby\u2019s Institute of Art and contemporary art theory at Goldsmiths, University of London, before working for the London-based art advisory Gurr Johns. But more recently her career has gone in a different direction.<\/p>\n

In 2024 she founded the high-end British perfume house Jouissance, after training under the renowned French perfumer Antoine Lie. However, her study of art history and theory still comes to the fore; the name comes from the writings of the French feminist H\u00e9l\u00e8ne Cixous, who used it to describe a form of women\u2019s sexual pleasure that is a source of her creative energy. The brand\u2019s first three fragrances are inspired by female writers of erotic fiction: Ana\u00efs Nin, Anne Desclos and Catherine Millet. One of them, En Plein Air, is described on Jouissance\u2019s website as perfect for those who want to \u201csmell like an unassuming art critic on her way to an\u00a0orgy\u201d.<\/p>\n

Based in London, Cheng is an avid art collector and patron, supporting institutions including the Serpentine, Studio Voltaire and the Institute of Contemporary Arts.<\/p>\n

The Art Newspaper: What was the first work you ever bought?<\/strong><\/p>\n

Cherry Cheng: Gray Sister by Tancredi di Carcaci, from [art adviser] Daniel Malarkey. I actually interned as Daniel\u2019s PA when I was doing my MA at Sotheby\u2019s Institute. Daniel remains one\u00a0of my dearest friends and mentors in London.<\/p>\n

What was the last work you bought?<\/strong><\/p>\n

The Clamorous Life of a House Painter XI\u00a0and\u00a0XII\u00a0by Anastasia Pavlou, from Hot Wheels. The pair of them are currently exhibited at Anastasia\u2019s solo\u00a0show at Hot Wheels\u2019s new space at\u00a0TOSITSA3 in Athens\u2014a very beautiful, restored building that just opened this summer. The gallery inaugurated the space by hosting some\u00a0of my favourite London galleries\u2014Brunette Coleman, Emalin, a. SQUIRE and Sadie Coles HQ\u2014for a group exhibition.<\/p>\n

How quickly do you decide to buy a work of art?<\/strong><\/p>\n

Sometimes it can be quite impulsive. I usually know if I want something right away and I always trust my instincts. And because I always fear someone else might get there first, I\u2019ve been known to buy an artwork within minutes of receiving a preview.<\/p>\n

What do you regret not buying when you had the chance?<\/strong><\/p>\n

Rafal Topolewski\u2019s Proximity, shown by Grimm Gallery at Frieze London last year. I didn\u2019t know the gallery then and somehow missed it on the first day. I came back for it later, but it was already gone.<\/p>\n

If you could have any work from any museum, what would it be?<\/strong><\/p>\n

This is a bit random, but I feel a strange, almost compulsive attraction\u00a0to Amaury-Duval\u2019s\u00a0Madame de Loynes. I go looking for her every time I visit the Mus\u00e9e d\u2019Orsay, ever since my very first school trip to Paris at 16.<\/p>\n

Where do you like to eat and drink during Frieze London?<\/strong><\/p>\n

Maison Estelle. The Twenty Two. Mount St. Restaurant and the Audley Public House. Bar Crispin in Soho. Fischers. St. John Marylebone. Toklas.<\/p>\n

Do you have any parties lined up?<\/strong><\/p>\n

Ted and Anna from Brunette Coleman\u00a0very kindly invited me as their guest for the Frieze collector\u2019s\u00a0dinner this year. It feels like\u00a0such an honour, and I\u2019m very excited about it. Also, Jago Rackham is staging a weekend-long durational\u00a0dining performance at Young Space. He will serve grand dishes to his chosen guests, the \u201cgreedies\u201d, in a fictive mise-en-sc\u00e8ne that blurs the line between feast and\u00a0performance, featuring collaborating artists including Issy Wood, Faye Wei Wei and Hamish Pearch. I\u2019ll be creating a fragrance, Eau\u00a0de GREED, especially for the\u00a0occasion.<\/p>\n

What is your least favourite thing about art fairs?<\/strong><\/p>\n

Having to stop and greet acquaintances every other minute; I don\u2019t think I\u2019ve ever managed to see everything I intend to.<\/p>\n

Where do you go in London to get away from it all?<\/strong><\/p>\n

I just moved to Notting Hill a few weeks ago (after years in Shoreditch, Mayfair and Covent Garden), so I already feel like I\u2019ve left it all behind. Jokes aside, I love visiting house museums like Dorich House and Eltham Palace\u2014especially on weekday\u00a0mornings, when they\u2019re blissfully quiet.<\/p>\n

What tip would you give to someone\u00a0visiting London for the first\u00a0time?<\/strong><\/p>\n
