{"id":50806,"date":"2025-04-26T00:58:12","date_gmt":"2025-04-26T00:58:12","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/50806\/"},"modified":"2025-04-26T00:58:12","modified_gmt":"2025-04-26T00:58:12","slug":"man-who-raped-woman-23-years-ago-in-bristol-jailed-for-10-years","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/50806\/","title":{"rendered":"Man who raped woman 23 years ago in Bristol jailed for 10 years"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>&#8220;The emotional impact will stay with me forever&#8221;<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/04\/0_AD_25-04-2025_inderjitbains.jpg\" alt=\"Inderjit Singh Bains, 46 and of Heneage Lane, Falfield.\" loading=\"eager\"  \/>Inderjit Singh Bains, 46 and of Heneage Lane, Falfield.(Image: Avon &amp; Somerset Police)<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \">A man who <a class=\"TextLink_text-link__dBSS0 TextLink_enabled__dJF3l\" href=\"https:\/\/www.bristolpost.co.uk\/all-about\/crime\" target=\"_self\" aria-label=\"\" tabindex=\"0\" rel=\"noopener\">attacked and raped<\/a> a woman in Bristol more than 23 years ago has been jailed for more than 10 years.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \">Inderjit Singh Bains, 46, of Heneage Lane, Falfield, was sentenced to 10 and a half years in jail earlier today (Friday, April 25).<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \">Bains committed the attack on a woman after picking her up in his van on January 10, 2022.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \">The victim, now in her fifties, reported the incident to the police in January 2022 and had crucially memorised the offender\u2019s number plate, which helped lead to his identification and arrest.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \">A jury unanimously found Bains guilty of rape and actual bodily harm following a trial at Bristol Crown <a class=\"TextLink_text-link__dBSS0 TextLink_enabled__dJF3l\" href=\"https:\/\/www.bristolpost.co.uk\/all-about\/courts\" target=\"_self\" aria-label=\"\" tabindex=\"0\" rel=\"noopener\">Court<\/a> in March.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \">At the sentencing hearing held earlier today in Bains&#8217; absence, Judge James Patrick said the offence involved &#8220;a degree of abduction&#8221; and the attack was &#8220;prolonged and persistent&#8221;, which had a &#8220;long-standing emotional effect&#8221; on the victim.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \">Bains picked up the victim, who was in the street sex trade, in his white panel van in the St Werburghs area of the city at around 1am on January 10, 2002.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \">The van had been circling the area and eventually stopped outside a pub, where Bains beckoned to the victim to go over<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \">After agreeing a fee, Bains drove towards Eastgate, where the victim had asked to go.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \">But he didn\u2019t turn off and headed up the M32 towards Frenchay, where he stopped in a secluded area off Stoke Lane.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \">The victim asked for payment first, which Bains pretended to reach for in his jacket pocket before punching her repeatedly to the face and body, causing her to lose and swallow a tooth.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \">He then raped her, without using a condom, before telling her to get dressed and driving her back into the city.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \">To protect others, the victim made a report to the One25 Project, which supports women in the street sex trade, soon after the attack. This report included a detailed description of the offender as well as his number plate<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \">In an impact statement read to the court, the victim said: \u201cThe immediate impact of this crime on me was so traumatic that I used heroin to suppress any emotional impact, the physical impacts of the attack healed after time, but the emotional impact will stay with me forever.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \">\u201cThe flashbacks, panic attacks and nightmares I have continue to this day.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \">&#8220;I truly thought I was going to die that night, that kind of trauma is not easily fixed.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \">\u201cThere is still so much judgement and stigma around women who are trapped in the lifestyle I was, that it\u2019s easier to let people think I\u2019m crazy, as how do I explain what happened to me?<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \">\u201cFor me to come forward again all these years later was the hardest decision I had to make, as I didn\u2019t trust the police or the justice system to take me or the crime against me seriously, I didn\u2019t realise how much emotional trauma I\u2019d locked away about the attack.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \">\u201cIf it wasn\u2019t for the empathetic, non-judgemental nature of my investigating officer, I would never have put myself through the retraumatising effects of a trial, but I am told this is also part of my healing process.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \">\u201cGoing to court was terrifying, especially having to face him, but I\u2019m so glad I did as I see him not as a monster, but as a coward who preys on the most vulnerable people in society.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \">Speaking afterwards, the victim added she also wanted to thank the jury for believing her and delivering a guilty verdict in this case.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \">Investigating officer PC Chris Quick, of Operation Bluestone, said: \u201cBains carried out a cruel, callous and violent attack on a vulnerable victim, leaving her with horrible injuries and a lifetime of trauma.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \">\u201cWhen he dropped her off in the city centre following the attack, the victim memorised his number plate, which she was able to recall two decades later when she reported the incident to me.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \">&#8220;The One25 Project had also retained the report the victim made in 2002, which proved to be a key piece of evidence in the case.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \">\u201cShe\u2019s had to spend the last 23 years without the justice she deserved, but her decision to come forward and report this offence is a testament to her enduring strength and courage.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \">\u201cI\u2019m so pleased she had enough faith in the police to believe she\u2019d be listened to and to trust us to investigate this terrible crime.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \">&#8220;I truly hope this outcome will encourage other victims of sexual violence to come forward, whenever they\u2019re ready, safe in the knowledge their voices will be heard.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \">Jennifer Riley, Chief Executive Officer of One25, said: \u201cThe courage and bravery shown by this woman is truly inspiring.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \">&#8220;We are relieved and encouraged to see the perpetrator of this heinous crime being brought to justice.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \">&#8220;Street sex workers experience alarmingly high levels of violence and abuse and far too often do not receive the justice they deserve.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \">\u201cAt One25, we remain committed to working closely with <a class=\"TextLink_text-link__dBSS0 TextLink_enabled__dJF3l\" href=\"https:\/\/www.bristolpost.co.uk\/all-about\/avon-and-somerset-constabulary\" target=\"_self\" aria-label=\"\" tabindex=\"0\" rel=\"noopener\">Avon and Somerset Police<\/a> to help keep women involved in street sex work safe.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \"><strong class=\"Strong_strong__e2x35\">Victims of rape or sexual assault, recent or non-recent, can self-refer to The Bridge, a Sexual Assault Referral Centre available 24\/7 365 days a year.
