{"id":508154,"date":"2025-10-18T00:50:11","date_gmt":"2025-10-18T00:50:11","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/508154\/"},"modified":"2025-10-18T00:50:11","modified_gmt":"2025-10-18T00:50:11","slug":"the-glasgow-origin-of-the-rocky-horror-picture-shows-corset","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/508154\/","title":{"rendered":"The Glasgow origin of the Rocky Horror Picture Show&#8217;s corset"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\">Saffron Shearer, a costume designer at <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bbc.co.uk\/news\/articles\/cj0ypjp4d8yo\" class=\"ssrcss-f6h2dj-InlineLink e1kn3p7n0\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">the recently reopened Citizens<\/a>, told BBC Scotland that some versions of the story have the costume bought at the Barras market, while others suggested it was the old Paddy&#8217;s Market on Shipburn Lane.<\/p>\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\">Saffron became interested in costume design by being a huge fan of the Rocky Horror Picture Show, and was thrilled when she started working at a theatre that had featured Tim Curry.<\/p>\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\">She told BBC Scotland: &#8220;The Maids was in the old studio theatre,  not the main house, and it was pretty controversial at the time &#8211; quite filthy and weird.<\/p>\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\">&#8220;It was called the Close theatre and it had a little room to try more Avant Garde material. To overcome censorship laws they made it a private member&#8217;s club, and that&#8217;s where they were having poetry readings, film screenings and new theatre.<\/p>\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\">&#8220;Sue Blane was starting out at the time and doing costumes, and just found this corset at either the Barras or St Paddy&#8217;s &#8211; over the years I&#8217;ve heard both.
