{"id":509110,"date":"2025-10-18T09:43:14","date_gmt":"2025-10-18T09:43:14","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/509110\/"},"modified":"2025-10-18T09:43:14","modified_gmt":"2025-10-18T09:43:14","slug":"boa-constrictor-found-in-bristol-park-near-primary-school","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/509110\/","title":{"rendered":"Boa constrictor found in Bristol park near primary school"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>&#8216;I wasn&#8217;t worried about it being dangerous, it didn&#8217;t have the energy to do any harm&#8217;<\/p>\n<p><strong class=\"Strong_strong__e2x35 __className_20a898\">Chiara Fiorillo<\/strong> and <strong class=\"Strong_strong__e2x35 __className_20a898\">Kim Horton<\/strong> Senior Reporter<\/p>\n<p>09:26, 18 Oct 2025Updated 09:34, 18 Oct 2025<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/10\/0_Kim-Horton.jpg\" alt=\"The boa constrictor was found inside a lidded box by a person who was strolling through Withywood Park in south Bristol\" loading=\"eager\"  \/>The boa constrictor was found inside a lidded box by a person who was strolling through Withywood Park in south Bristol(Image: Avon and Somerset police)<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\" publication=\"bristolpost\">It was an unusual day for a dog walker when they were out with their pet in a park near a primary school and stumbled upon a boa constrictor in a box.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\" publication=\"bristolpost\">The reptile was discovered within a covered container by someone taking a stroll through Withywood Park in south Bristol.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\" publication=\"bristolpost\">Park volunteer Kristie described the snake as &#8220;probably the strangest thing we&#8217;ve ever seen in the park&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\" publication=\"bristolpost\">Avon and Somerset Police rescued the serpent and transported it to a veterinary practice before it was handed over to a reptile charity, <a class=\"TextLink_text-link__dBSS0 TextLink_enabled__dJF3l\" href=\"https:\/\/www.mirror.co.uk\/news\/uk-news\/dog-walker-finds-boa-constrictor-36088111\" target=\"_self\" aria-label=\"\" tabindex=\"0\" rel=\"noopener\">reports The Mirror.<\/a><\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\" publication=\"bristolpost\">The force reported that the boa was &#8216;cold and lethargic&#8217; and might have died if it had remained there any longer.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\" publication=\"bristolpost\">Kirstie said she initially believed the snake was dead when she first spotted it.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\" publication=\"bristolpost\">Nevertheless, after the boa raised its head she recognised it was actually alive, albeit &#8220;very weak&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\" publication=\"bristolpost\">Speaking to the <a class=\"TextLink_text-link__dBSS0 TextLink_enabled__dJF3l\" href=\"https:\/\/www.bristolpost.co.uk\/all-about\/bbc\" target=\"\" aria-label=\"\" tabindex=\"0\" rel=\"noopener\">BBC<\/a>, the volunteer said she had previously rescued dogs but never snakes.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\" publication=\"bristolpost\">&#8220;I wasn&#8217;t worried about it being dangerous, it didn&#8217;t have the energy to do any harm,&#8221; she said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\" publication=\"bristolpost\">Kirstie believes the snake was abandoned. As the snakes get larger, they can tackle bigger prey such as wild pigs.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\" publication=\"bristolpost\">Generally, these snakes don&#8217;t pose a threat to humans as they are non-venomous and not aggressive &#8211; but they can be dangerous, especially if they are large.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\" publication=\"bristolpost\">Boa constrictors can grow to be between 5ft and 9ft on average, but large females can reach up to 12ft or more, and weigh over 60lbs.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\" publication=\"bristolpost\">A bite from a large boa can cause severe lacerations. Most bites are defensive and happen when the snake feels threatened or provoked.
