{"id":509305,"date":"2025-10-18T11:34:25","date_gmt":"2025-10-18T11:34:25","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/509305\/"},"modified":"2025-10-18T11:34:25","modified_gmt":"2025-10-18T11:34:25","slug":"king-charles-and-queen-camilla-to-visit-pope-leo-in-october","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/509305\/","title":{"rendered":"King Charles and Queen Camilla to visit Pope Leo in October"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmg172ezh003k26nk7milg1hg@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Britain\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2013\/06\/27\/europe\/prince-charles-fast-facts\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">King Charles III <\/a>and Queen Camilla will undertake a state visit to the Holy See this fall, Buckingham Palace has announced.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmg17374900073b6np5d1tj12@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            The trip \u2013 which will take place in late October \u2013 will see the royal couple hold their first meeting with Pope <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2025\/05\/11\/europe\/pope-leo-catholic-church-whats-next-intl\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Leo XIV<\/a>, who was elected in May following the death of Pope Francis.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmg17374900083b6n84hc0iax@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            The palace said that Charles and Camilla would join the new pontiff in celebrating the Catholic Church\u2019s Jubilee Year, which takes place every quarter of a century.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmg17374900093b6nw5tfhlq2@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            The Catholic Jubilee Year \u2013 or Holy Year \u2013 was established in the 14th century by Pope Boniface VIII and is 12 months focused on forgiveness and reconciliation.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmg173749000a3b6n0me0oqdr@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            \u201cThe visit will also celebrate the ecumenical work by the Church of England and the Catholic Church, reflecting the Jubilee year\u2019s theme of walking together as \u2018Pilgrims of Hope,\u2019\u201d the palace said\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmg173749000b3b6n66a9dumg@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            The royal couple were supposed to pay a state visit to the Vatican in early April, but the trip was postponed over Francis\u2019 poor health. They continued with a state visit to Italy, visiting Rome and Ravenna in the northeast.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmg173749000c3b6nhm79ckdx@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Charles and Camilla were able to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2025\/04\/10\/europe\/king-charles-queen-camila-pope-francis-intl-hnk\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">privately visit<\/a> Francis on April 9 \u2013 a fortnight before the first Latin American pope died of a stroke and heart failure.\n    <\/p>\n<p>       <img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/10\/foto-20250410061651255.jpg\" alt=\"Pope Francis met privately with King Charles and Queen Camilla on April 9.\" class=\"image_large__dam-img image_large__dam-img--loading\" onload=\"this.classList.remove('image_large__dam-img--loading')\" onerror=\"imageLoadError(this)\" height=\"1600\" width=\"2400\" loading=\"lazy\"\/><\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmg173749000d3b6nlanjsv3s@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            The meeting &#8211; which happened to fall on the royal couple\u2019s 20th wedding anniversary &#8211; was organized with short notice as it was subject to the pope\u2019s health. Francis was said to have been keen to personally wish them a happy anniversary.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmg173749000e3b6n64ojbfdp@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Charles, 76, is the Supreme Governor of the Church of England. The role dates back to the reign of Henry VIII when in the 16th century he broke with the Catholic Church to marry Anne Boleyn.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmg173749000f3b6n19vah915@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Despite the turbulent past of the Reformation almost 500 years ago, the bonds between the Vatican and the British monarchy are today marked by warmth and mutual respect. The UK and the Holy See have had full diplomatic relations since 1982.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmg173749000g3b6nnfw6794u@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2013\/06\/27\/world\/europe\/prince-charles-fast-facts\/index.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Charles<\/a> \u2013 who is known to be deeply faithful and regularly attends services \u2013 has visited the Holy See on several occasions.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmg173749000h3b6nagowfdx3@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            As Prince of Wales, Charles visited Vatican City five times. He was present in St. Peter\u2019s Square for the 2019 canonization ceremony of Saint John Henry Newman, an influential theologian who converted to Catholicism after years as an Anglican priest.
