However, the Department for Work and Pensions (DWP) estimates a staggering 760,000 pensioners are entitled for the <a class=\"TextLink_text-link__dBSS0 TextLink_enabled__dJF3l\" href=\"https:\/\/www.dailyrecord.co.uk\/all-about\/state-pension\" target=\"_blank\" aria-label=\"State Pension Link opens in a new tab.\" tabindex=\"0\" rel=\"noopener\">State Pension <\/a>top-up, but not claiming it.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\" publication=\"dailyrecord\">The Department will be continuing its awareness campaign this year, encouraging people to check their eligibility and make a claim. Married pensioners with a combined weekly income of less than \u00a3346 per week, or single pensioners with an income of below \u00a3227.10 could be eligible for <a class=\"TextLink_text-link__dBSS0 TextLink_enabled__dJF3l\" href=\"https:\/\/www.gov.uk\/pension-credit\" target=\"_blank\" aria-label=\"Pension CreditLink opens in a new tab.\" tabindex=\"0\" rel=\"noopener\">Pension Credit<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\" publication=\"dailyrecord\">Some older people think because they have savings or own their home they would not be eligible for the means-tested benefit, which can also provide access to help with housing costs, heating bills and <a class=\"TextLink_text-link__dBSS0 TextLink_enabled__dJF3l\" href=\"https:\/\/www.dailyrecord.co.uk\/all-about\/council-tax\" target=\"_blank\" aria-label=\"Council TaxLink opens in a new tab.\" tabindex=\"0\" rel=\"noopener\">Council Tax<\/a>. This means older people on a low income making a new claim this month, could receive their first payment and any arrears by the end of December.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\" publication=\"dailyrecord\">It\u2019s crucial for all older people &#8211; single, married or cohabiting &#8211; to make sure they are claiming all the additional financial support they are entitled to this year to help boost their income and offset the ongoing cost of living crisis.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\" publication=\"dailyrecord\">Below is everything you need to know about the benefit.<\/p>\n<p>Pension Credit in a nutshell<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\" publication=\"dailyrecord\">When you apply for Pension Credit your income is calculated. If you have a partner, your income is calculated together.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\" publication=\"dailyrecord\"><strong class=\"Strong_strong__e2x35\">Pension Credit tops up:<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul class=\"UnorderedList_unordered-list__gzblI\" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"unordered-list\" publication=\"dailyrecord\">\n<li class=\"sc-700e1ff3-0 VljCu\">your weekly income to \u00a3227.10 if you\u2019re single<\/li>\n<li class=\"sc-700e1ff3-0 VljCu\">your joint weekly income to \u00a3346.60 if you have a partner<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\" publication=\"dailyrecord\">If your income is higher, you might still be eligible for Pension Credit if you have a disability, you care for someone, you have savings or you have housing costs.<\/p>\n<p>What counts as income<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\" publication=\"dailyrecord\">Your income includes:<\/p>\n<ul class=\"UnorderedList_unordered-list__gzblI\" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"unordered-list\" publication=\"dailyrecord\">\n<li class=\"sc-700e1ff3-0 VljCu\">State Pension<\/li>\n<li class=\"sc-700e1ff3-0 VljCu\">other pensions<\/li>\n<li class=\"sc-700e1ff3-0 VljCu\">earnings from employment and self-employment<\/li>\n<li class=\"sc-700e1ff3-0 VljCu\">most social security benefits &#8211; for example, Carer\u2019s Allowance<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>What does not count as income<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\" publication=\"dailyrecord\">Not all benefits are counted as income. For example, the following are not counted:<\/p>\n<ul class=\"UnorderedList_unordered-list__gzblI\" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"unordered-list\" publication=\"dailyrecord\">\n<li class=\"sc-700e1ff3-0 VljCu\">Adult Disability Payment<\/li>\n<li class=\"sc-700e1ff3-0 VljCu\">Attendance Allowance<\/li>\n<li class=\"sc-700e1ff3-0 VljCu\">DWP Christmas Bonus<\/li>\n<li class=\"sc-700e1ff3-0 VljCu\">Child Benefit<\/li>\n<li class=\"sc-700e1ff3-0 VljCu\">Disability Living Allowance<\/li>\n<li class=\"sc-700e1ff3-0 VljCu\">Pension Age Disability Payment<\/li>\n<li class=\"sc-700e1ff3-0 VljCu\">Personal Independence Payment<\/li>\n<li class=\"sc-700e1ff3-0 VljCu\">social fund payments like Winter Fuel Allowance<\/li>\n<li class=\"sc-700e1ff3-0 VljCu\">Housing Benefit<\/li>\n<li class=\"sc-700e1ff3-0 VljCu\">Council Tax Reduction<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Your savings<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\" publication=\"dailyrecord\">If you have \u00a310,000 or less in savings and investments this will not affect your Pension Credit.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\" publication=\"dailyrecord\">If you have more than \u00a310,000, every \u00a3500 over \u00a310,000 counts as \u00a31 income a week. For example, if you have \u00a311,000 in savings, this counts as \u00a32 income a week.<\/p>\n<p>How to check eligibility for Pension Credit<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\" publication=\"dailyrecord\">Older people, or friends and family, can quickly check their eligibility and get an estimate of what they may receive by using the online Pension Credit calculator on GOV.UK <a class=\"TextLink_text-link__dBSS0 TextLink_enabled__dJF3l\" href=\"https:\/\/www.gov.uk\/pension-credit-calculator\" target=\"_blank\" aria-label=\"here.Link opens in a new tab.\" tabindex=\"0\" rel=\"noopener\">here.<\/a><\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\" publication=\"dailyrecord\">Alternatively, pensioners can contact the Pension Credit helpline directly to make a claim on 0800 99 1234 &#8211; lines are open 8am to 6pm, Monday to Friday.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\" publication=\"dailyrecord\"><strong class=\"Strong_strong__e2x35\">Expert help and advice is also available from:<\/strong><\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\" publication=\"dailyrecord\">More details about claiming Pension Credit can be fond on GOV.UK <a class=\"TextLink_text-link__dBSS0 TextLink_enabled__dJF3l\" href=\"https:\/\/www.gov.uk\/pension-credit\" target=\"_blank\" aria-label=\"here.Link opens in a new tab.\" tabindex=\"0\" rel=\"noopener\">here.<\/a><\/p>\n<p>Other help if you get Pension Credit<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\" publication=\"dailyrecord\">If you qualify for Pension Credit you can also get other help, such as:<\/p>\n<ul class=\"UnorderedList_unordered-list__gzblI\" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"unordered-list\" publication=\"dailyrecord\">\n<li class=\"sc-700e1ff3-0 VljCu\">Housing Benefit if you rent the property you live in<\/li>\n<li class=\"sc-700e1ff3-0 VljCu\">Support for Mortgage Interest if you own the property you live in<\/li>\n<li class=\"sc-700e1ff3-0 VljCu\">Council Tax discount<\/li>\n<li class=\"sc-700e1ff3-0 VljCu\">Free TV licence if you are aged 75 or over<\/li>\n<li class=\"sc-700e1ff3-0 VljCu\">Help with NHS dental treatment, glasses and transport costs for hospital appointments<\/li>\n<li class=\"sc-700e1ff3-0 VljCu\">Help with your heating costs through the Warm Home Discount Scheme<\/li>\n<li class=\"sc-700e1ff3-0 VljCu\">A discount on the Royal Mail redirection service if you are moving house<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Mixed aged older couples and Pension Credit<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\" publication=\"dailyrecord\">In May 2019, the law changed so a \u2018mixed age couple\u2019 &#8211; a couple where one partner is of State Pension age and the other is under it &#8211; are considered to be a \u2018working age\u2019 couple when checking entitlement to means-tested benefits.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\" publication=\"dailyrecord\">This means they cannot claim Pension Credit or pension age Housing Benefit until they are both State Pension age.
