Those incidents gave new momentum to a so-called drone wall \u2014\u00a0an initiative first pitched by front-line countries last year and backed by von der Leyen in her State of the Union address last month.<\/p>\n<p>Earlier this week, however, German Defense Minister <a href=\"https:\/\/www.politico.eu\/article\/german-defense-minister-boris-pistorius-skeptical-drone-wall-russia-airspace-violation\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Boris Pistorius said<\/a> there were more urgent priorities to tackle. \u201cDrone defense, of course, but not by a drone wall,\u201d he told an audience at the Warsaw Security Forum.<\/p>\n<p>The drone wall debate also underscores how geography often leads to disagreements among European leaders regarding how best to protect the continent from external threats, including Russia \u2014 and those divisions were on show in Copenhagen as leaders entered the summit. <\/p>\n<p>Italian Prime Minister <a href=\"https:\/\/www.politico.eu\/article\/european-council-summit-copenhagen-security-russia-live-updates\/#id_1314027\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Giorgia Meloni warned<\/a> about not forgetting Europe&#8217;s southern flank, a message echoed by her Greek counterpart Kyriakos Mitsotakis.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAny common European defense project concerning Europe cannot be limited to the continent\u2019s eastern borders,\u201d he told reporters.<\/p>\n<p>Meanwhile, Latvian Prime Minister Evika Sili\u0146a and Lithuanian President Gitanas Naus\u0117da praised the project ahead of the Copenhagen meeting,\u00a0highlighting a clear divide between front-line nations and countries further from the Russian and Ukrainian borders.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"In recent weeks, drones have violated\u00a0Polish,\u00a0Romanian,\u00a0Danish\u00a0and\u00a0Norwegian\u00a0airspace, with Europe casting blame on Russia in many of the cases.
