The stunning display happens when charged particles from the Sun \u2014 known as solar winds \u2014 collide with gases high in the Earth\u2019s atmosphere.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\" publication=\"dailyrecord\"><a class=\"TextLink_text-link__dBSS0 TextLink_enabled__dJF3l\" href=\"https:\/\/www.dailyrecord.co.uk\/all-about\/universities-and-colleges\" target=\"_blank\" aria-label=\"Lancaster University\u2019sLink opens in a new tab.\" tabindex=\"0\" rel=\"noopener\">Lancaster University\u2019s<\/a> AuroraWatch UK issued the rare red alert tonight, saying geomagnetic activity is high enough that the aurora \u201cis likely to be visible by eye and camera from anywhere in the UK.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\" publication=\"dailyrecord\">Their live chart, which measures magnetic activity in nanotesla (nT), showed readings climbing above 200nT \u2014 a strong indicator that conditions are perfect for an aurora display, reports the Mirror.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\" publication=\"dailyrecord\"><a class=\"TextLink_text-link__dBSS0 TextLink_enabled__dJF3l\" href=\"https:\/\/www.dailyrecord.co.uk\/all-about\/met-office\" target=\"_blank\" aria-label=\"The Met OfficeLink opens in a new tab.\" tabindex=\"0\" rel=\"noopener\">The Met Office<\/a> also confirmed that \u201cthe arrival of a fast solar wind\u201d could boost the spectacle through Saturday and Sunday (UTC), with the best chances of seeing the lights over Scotland and northern parts of the UK.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\" publication=\"dailyrecord\">If you miss out this weekend, don\u2019t worry \u2014 the next year promises even more chances. Experts expect this peak to last until March 2026 before easing off again until the mid-2030s.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\" publication=\"dailyrecord\">You don\u2019t need to trek to the Arctic to see the lights either.
