{"id":510617,"date":"2025-10-18T23:59:15","date_gmt":"2025-10-18T23:59:15","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/510617\/"},"modified":"2025-10-18T23:59:15","modified_gmt":"2025-10-18T23:59:15","slug":"u-s-jury-issues-20-million-verdict-against-frances-largest-bank-over-sudanese-atrocities","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/510617\/","title":{"rendered":"U.S. jury issues $20 million verdict against France&#8217;s largest bank over Sudanese atrocities"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>A federal jury in New York has issued a nearly $21 million verdict against France\u2019s largest bank for giving the Sudanese government access to the U.S. financial system as it engaged in atrocities two decades ago.<\/p>\n<p>The woman and two men who obtained the verdict against <a href=\"https:\/\/fortune.com\/company\/bnp-paribas\/\" target=\"_blank\" aria-label=\"Go to https:\/\/fortune.com\/company\/bnp-paribas\/\" class=\"sc-5ad7098d-0 lcJVdL\" rel=\"noopener\">BNP Paribas<\/a> S.A. are U.S. citizens who left\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/sudan-war-darfur-landslide-1c8bb8e9e3c3d3fea91b5b83c1201221\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" aria-label=\"Go to https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/sudan-war-darfur-landslide-1c8bb8e9e3c3d3fea91b5b83c1201221\" class=\"sc-5ad7098d-0 lcJVdL\">Sudan<\/a>\u00a0after being displaced, losing their homes and property. They were awarded amounts of between $6.7 million and $7.3 million apiece on Friday after jurors deliberated for about four hours.<\/p>\n<p>In an Aug. 28 pretrial memo, the plaintiffs argued BNP Paribas helped the Sudanese government \u201ccarry out one of the most notorious campaigns of persecution in modern history.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThey\u2019re very gratified that steps on the road toward justice are being achieved, and they\u2019re happy that the bank is being held responsible for its abhorrent conduct,\u201d their lawyer, Adam Levitt, said Saturday.<\/p>\n<p>A spokesperson for BNP Paribas said in an email the result \u201cis clearly wrong and there are very strong grounds to appeal the verdict\u201d and that the bank had not been allowed to introduce important evidence.<\/p>\n<p>The bank argued Sudan had other sources of money and that the company did not knowingly help the government engage in human rights abuses under former President\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/8c637e57658243aca3ee36318a6b5e20\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" aria-label=\"Go to https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/8c637e57658243aca3ee36318a6b5e20\" class=\"sc-5ad7098d-0 lcJVdL\">Omar al-Bashir<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>BNP Paribas gave Sudanese authorities access to international money markets from at least 2002 to 2008. As many as 300,000 people were killed and 2.7 million driven from their homes in the Darfur region over the years. The litigation pertains to government actions in many parts of the country.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/icc-court-darfur-sudan-verdict-538055077897127929259e7515b7a40c\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" aria-label=\"Go to https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/icc-court-darfur-sudan-verdict-538055077897127929259e7515b7a40c\" class=\"sc-5ad7098d-0 lcJVdL\">Al-Bashir is being held<\/a>\u00a0in a military-run detention facility in northern Sudan, his lawyer said earlier this month. He has been charged by the International Criminal Court with crimes that include genocide but has not been handed over to face justice in The Hague.
