But with many of us starting our day with coffee, we could argue that a cup of joe is also a vital part of a functioning body and mind. According to Drive Research, 73% of people in the U.S. drink coffee <a href=\"https:\/\/www.driveresearch.com\/market-research-company-blog\/coffee-survey\/\" target=\"_blank\" data-vars-ga-outbound-link=\"https:\/\/www.driveresearch.com\/market-research-company-blog\/coffee-survey\/\" data-vars-ga-ux-element=\"Hyperlink\" data-vars-ga-call-to-action=\"every day,\" data-node-id=\"0.3\" class=\"body-link css-1i7jlb0 emevuu60\" rel=\"noopener\">every day,<\/a> and 93% drink it at least once per week. <\/p>\n<p data-journey-content=\"true\" data-node-id=\"1\" class=\"css-auya5i emevuu60\">Between a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.delish.com\/food-news\/how-much-water-should-you-drink\/\" target=\"_blank\" data-vars-ga-outbound-link=\"https:\/\/www.delish.com\/food-news\/how-much-water-should-you-drink\/\" data-vars-ga-ux-element=\"Hyperlink\" data-vars-ga-call-to-action=\"love for hydration\" data-node-id=\"1.1\" class=\"body-link css-1i7jlb0 emevuu60\" rel=\"noopener\">love for hydration<\/a> and coffee, you&#8217;ve probably wondered whether your daily cup counts toward your water intake. A black coffee, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.delish.com\/cooking\/recipe-ideas\/cold-brew-coffee-recipe\/\" target=\"_blank\" data-vars-ga-outbound-link=\"https:\/\/www.delish.com\/cooking\/recipe-ideas\/cold-brew-coffee-recipe\/\" data-vars-ga-ux-element=\"Hyperlink\" data-vars-ga-call-to-action=\"cold brew\" data-node-id=\"1.5\" class=\"body-link css-1i7jlb0 emevuu60\" rel=\"noopener\">cold brew<\/a>, or Americano is all water, right? <\/p>\n<p data-journey-content=\"true\" data-node-id=\"2\" class=\"css-auya5i emevuu60\">To get to the bottom of this, we consulted two health experts: Alex Larson, R.D.N., founder and CEO of <a href=\"https:\/\/alexlarsonnutrition.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" data-vars-ga-outbound-link=\"https:\/\/alexlarsonnutrition.com\/\" data-vars-ga-ux-element=\"Hyperlink\" data-vars-ga-call-to-action=\"Alex Larson Nutrition\" data-node-id=\"2.1\" class=\"body-link css-1i7jlb0 emevuu60\" rel=\"noopener\">Alex Larson Nutrition<\/a>, and Dr. Raj Dasgupta, Chief Medical Advisor for <a href=\"https:\/\/www.garagegymreviews.com\/author\/drraj\" target=\"_blank\" data-vars-ga-outbound-link=\"https:\/\/www.garagegymreviews.com\/author\/drraj\" data-vars-ga-ux-element=\"Hyperlink\" data-vars-ga-call-to-action=\"Garage Gym Reviews\" data-node-id=\"2.3\" class=\"body-link css-1i7jlb0 emevuu60\" rel=\"noopener\">Garage Gym Reviews<\/a>. <\/p>\n<p>So, Does Coffee Count As Water?<\/p>\n<p data-journey-content=\"true\" data-node-id=\"5\" class=\"css-auya5i emevuu60\">Coffee drinkers, listen up. Both Larson and Dr. Dasgupta say yes, coffee can count toward your daily water intake. <\/p>\n<p data-journey-content=\"true\" data-node-id=\"6\" class=\"css-auya5i emevuu60\">&#8220;Even though caffeine can have a mild diuretic effect, the water in coffee usually makes up for it, especially if you\u2019re a regular drinker,&#8221; Dr. Dasgupta says.<\/p>\n<p data-journey-content=\"true\" data-node-id=\"7\" class=\"css-auya5i emevuu60\">However, Larson adds that high amounts of caffeine might increase fluid loss for some people. This usually happens around 400mg or more of caffeine, or four or more cups of coffee per day. <\/p>\n<p data-journey-content=\"true\" data-node-id=\"8\" class=\"css-auya5i emevuu60\">In terms of how much caffeine is safe to drink, the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.fda.gov\/consumers\/consumer-updates\/spilling-beans-how-much-caffeine-too-much\" target=\"_blank\" data-vars-ga-outbound-link=\"https:\/\/www.fda.gov\/consumers\/consumer-updates\/spilling-beans-how-much-caffeine-too-much\" data-vars-ga-ux-element=\"Hyperlink\" data-vars-ga-call-to-action=\"FDA\" data-node-id=\"8.3\" class=\"body-link css-1i7jlb0 emevuu60\" rel=\"noopener\">FDA<\/a> says up to 400mg of caffeine per day is &#8220;an amount not generally associated with negative effects.&#8221; <\/p>\n<p data-journey-content=\"true\" data-node-id=\"9\" class=\"css-auya5i emevuu60\">The experts say other drinks like tea and soda also count toward hydration, but there are some caveats. Dr. Dasgupta says drinks high in sugar and additives, like soda and energy drinks, aren&#8217;t the best way to hydrate. <\/p>\n<p data-journey-content=\"true\" data-node-id=\"10\" class=\"css-auya5i emevuu60\">&#8220;They\u2019re fine in moderation, but water and plain tea are better options,&#8221; he says.<\/p>\n<p>Tips For Staying Hydrated While Drinking Coffee<\/p>\n<p data-journey-content=\"true\" data-node-id=\"12\" class=\"css-auya5i emevuu60\">When it comes to staying hydrated, both Larson and Dr. Dasgupta recommend pairing coffee with water. <\/p>\n<p data-journey-content=\"true\" data-node-id=\"13\" class=\"css-auya5i emevuu60\">&#8220;A good rule of thumb is to pair each caffeinated beverage with a glass of water, especially around exercise or in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.delish.com\/food-news\/how-to-stay-hydrated-in-heat\/\" target=\"_blank\" data-vars-ga-outbound-link=\"https:\/\/www.delish.com\/food-news\/how-to-stay-hydrated-in-heat\/\" data-vars-ga-ux-element=\"Hyperlink\" data-vars-ga-call-to-action=\"hot weather\" data-node-id=\"13.1\" class=\"body-link css-1i7jlb0 emevuu60\" rel=\"noopener\">hot weather<\/a>,&#8221; Larson says. <\/p>\n<p data-journey-content=\"true\" data-node-id=\"14\" class=\"css-auya5i emevuu60\">And how you start your day can make an impact, too. <\/p>\n<p data-journey-content=\"true\" data-node-id=\"15\" class=\"css-auya5i emevuu60\">&#8220;Starting your day with water, not just coffee, makes a big difference,&#8221; Dr. Dasgupta says.
